(1-7) Cantabria . On 10.10 seven birds were seen at San Vicente de la Barquera, Cantabria (Alejandro García Herrera)

Blue-winged Teal Anas discors (1)

(1) Lugo. There was a drake at Lago, Xove, Lugo on 24.10 (Daniel López Velasco, Fernando Arce), perhaps the bird seen last year coming back.

(1) Asturies . One female was at Ría de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies on 13.10 (Adolfo Villaverde)

American Black Scoter Melanitta americana (1)

(1) Bizkaia . On 16-17.10 a putative drake of this species showing extensive yellow areas in its bill was seen at Urdaibai reserve, Bizkaia (Xuan Cortés, Marco García Gala, Clemente Alvarez Usategui and others). See three thumbnails here and some videos at youtube here, here and here


Pied-billed Grebe Podilymbus podiceps (1)
Lugo. The bird seen regularly at Riocaldo lagoons, Begonte, Lugo was relocated in the same place now in winter plumage on 9.10 (José Gómez Aparicio, Toño Salazar)

(Fea's) Petrel Pterodroma c.f. feae (1)
(1) A Coruña. An individual was seen from Estaca de Bares cape, A Coruña, on 3.10 (David Calleja). The 6th this year!

Presumed Hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta (1,2)
(1) Tarragona. The Tancada hybrid was seen again on 1.10 at the usual place near the Tancada saltpans, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Cristian Jensen) and on 20.10 (Ricard Gutiérrez), see two thumbnails here.

(2) Sevilla. A bird was seen at Brazo del Este, Sevilla, on 25.10 (J.Luis Anguita). See three thumbnails here..

Lesser Flamingo Phoenicopterus minor (1)
(1) Sevilla. There was one at Veta la Palma, Espacio Natural Doñana, La Puebla del Río, Sevilla on 14.10 (José Luis Arroyo). See a thumbnail here.

Rüppell's Vulture Gyps rueppellii (1-4,5,6-7,8-10)
(1-4) Cádiz. There were four different birds at Cazalla observatory, Cádiz on 1.10 (Pako Zufiaur)

(5) Málaga. There was a subadult bird at Ronda, Málaga on 3.10 (Juan Luis Muñoz Roldán). See a photo below.

(6-7) Cádiz. There were two different birds over La Hoya observatory, Tarifa, Cádiz on 10.10 (Javier Elorriaga, John Wright y Justin Peter / Fundación Migres). Birds were attempting to cross to Africa with a group of Griffons that have attempted twice to cross without success.

(8-10) Cádiz. There were 2 at El Bujeo, Tarifa and one at Los Barrios dump, all Cádiz province on 21.10 (Javier Elorriaga, Dario Delgado). See two photos below and one thumbnail here. It is difficult to assign these birds to the ID GUIDE of Rüppell's Vultures in Autumn 2010 in Spain you can see in this website.

Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus (1,2,3)
Illes Balears. On 8.10 one was seen at Cabrera island, Balearics (Eduardo Amengual,David Cuenca).
(2) Cádiz. There was a juvenile at Dehesa de las Yeguas, marismas de Puerto Real, Cádiz, on 2.10 (José Miguel Rubio). See three thumbnails here. This bird was seen 5 hours later at Salinas de Bonanza, Cádiz (José Luis Anguita, Alberto Savijn).
(3) Valencia One juvenile was seen at Marjal de Pego on 14.10 (Malcolm Palmer, Barry Chambers, Fran Vickers, Pete Alden et al) this bird might be the same seen on 13.10 at PN del Desierto de las Palmas, Castelló (Miguel Tirado).

(1) Castelló On 14.10 an adult cirtensis was seen and photographed on passage over PN del Desierto de las Palmas, Castelló (Miguel Tirado). See two thumbnails here.

Greater Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga (1,2,3,4,5)
(1) Barcelona On 12.10 a subadult bird was seen over over Figueres, Girona (Marc Bertran)
. On 15.10 a large eagle, possibly of this species, was seen over Garraf hills, Barcelona (Raúl Bastida)
. It might have been the same bird (ed. comment).

(2) Alicante On 18.10 a subadult was seen at North Gate, El Hondo Nature Reserve, Alicante (Grahan Critchell). It was not Tonn, the Estonian Eagle. (3) Valencia On 18.10 a subadult (not bird (2) given distance and timing) was seen over El Palmar, Albufera de Valencia, Valencia (Toni Alcocer i Vicente Sancho)

(4) Alicante On 20.10 morning, Tonn, the Estonian Greater Spotted Eagle, arrived at El Hondo Nature Reserve, Alicante (Graham Critchell).Seen on 26.10 (Graham Critchell).

(5) Sevilla. A 1w bird was seen at Brazo del Este, Puebla del Río, Sevilla, on 26.10 (Alfonso Barragán; Paco Chiclana)

American Golden Plover Pluvialis dominica (1,2-3)
Asturies The individual found at ria de la Villa, Asturies on 11.9 remained there on 6.10 (Adolfo Villaverde)

(2-3)topo Lanzarote One was found at Tias golf course, Lanzarote, on 13.10 (F.J. García Vargas). See two photos below. Another was at Saladar de la Santa, Lanzarote (F.J.García Vargas). Both still there on 17.10 (Juan Sagardía) and on 21.10 (J.Sagardía; F.J.García Vargas, A.Unquiles).

Pectoral Sandpiper Calidris melanotos (1,2,3,4,5)

(1) Girona The juvenile seen at Estany del Cortalet on 29.9 remained there on 1.10 (Gerard Dalmau, Miguel Àngel Fuentes, Adrià Bellvert)

(2) Tarragona. A bird was seen at Serrallo ricefields on 2.10 (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé). See a thumbnail here.This juvenile remained at the same site, the Serrallo ricefields on 7.10 morning (Ricard Gutiérrez). See a thumbnail here. Seen again on 9.10 (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé) but moved to another area on 11.10 (Daniel Roca)

(3) Pontevedra. A bird was seen at Xunqueira del rio Lagares, Vigo, Pontevedra on 9.10 (Marcos Prada). See a photo below. The bird remained in the same area on 10.10 when photographed again (Álvaro Rodríguez, Carlos Luciarte). See another photo below and two thumbnails here.

(4) Toledo On 17.10 one was found at laguna del Longar, Lillo, Toledo (Jose Gómez Aparicio)

(5) Murcia On 25.10 a bird, possibly the 1st for the region, was seen at EDAR (depuradora) El Algar, Cartagena (Tomas Garcia Rubio and Jacinto Martinez Rodenas). Identification was confirmed on 26.10 (Richard Howard).Seen and photographed until 28.9 (R.Howard). See thumbnails here.

Sharp-tailed Sandpiper Calidris acuminata (1) THIRD FOR SPAIN
(1) Valencia. The adult found at R.N del Malvinar, El Perelló (Sueca) P.N Albufera de València on 29.9 was last seen on 1.10 (Josep Puentes; Jus Pérez Martín). See photos and video in the September 2010 page.

Buff-breasted Sandpiper Tryngites subruficollis (1,2-4,5-6,7,8,9,10-11,12,13)
(1) A Coruña. The juvenile found at Baldaio, Carballo, A Coruña on 30.9 was still there on 1.10 (Xabier Varela). See a photo below and thumbnails here

(2-4) Alicante. The 3 juveniles featured last month (numbers 13-15) remained at the field at Vistabella Road near El Hondo, Alicante on 2.10 (Graham Critchell)

(5-6) Sevilla. There were 2 at Ojuelos, Marchena, Sevilla on 3.10 morning (Manolo Villaécija, Paco Chiclana). On 7.10 these two were joined by a 3rd individual (Paco Chiclana, Mario Martín).The three birds were still there on 10.10 (Paco Chiclana, Manolo Villaécija, Rafa García; Alberto Savijn, José Luis Anguita) but two on 15.10 (J.L.Anguita; D.Ojuelos; Gonzalo Lage, Antonio Miguel Pérez et al)

(7) Tarragona. One of the birds at Delta de l'Ebre remained there on 1.10 (Cristian Jensen et al). This adult remained at the same site, the Migjorn grass fields on 6.10 (Ricard Gutiérrez). See a thumbnail here. Seen again on 11.10 (Daniel Roca)

(8) Sevilla. A new individual, totalling 3, joined birds (5-6) at Ojuelos, Marchena, Sevilla on 7.10 (Paco Chiclana, Mario Martín). See a thumbnail here. The three birds were still there on 10.10 (Paco Chiclana, Manolo Villaécija, Rafa García)

(9) Palencia. On 14.10 a bird was found at Laguna de Boada de Campos, Palencia (Carlos Zumalacárregui y Javi Prieto). See a thumbnail here. The bird remained in the area on 15.10 and 17.10 to 21.10 (C.Zumalacárregui). Also there on 24.10 (Antonio Ceballos)

(10-11) Murcia On 14.10 two were seen at Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar, Murcia (Mark Powell)

(12) Cáceres On 15.10 one was found at Valdecañas reservoir, Cáceres. See two photos below. The 1st for Extremadura (Ángel Sánchez)

(13) Valencia. On 20.10 an individual was found at Els Bassals, Sueca, Albufera de València ('Alas sobre agua' volunteers). Seen later by more people (Bosco Díes et al; Miguel Piera). Long-billed Dowitcher Limnodromus scolopaceus (1,2)
(1) Tarragona. There was a juvenile at the same ricefield at El Serrallo, near l'Aufacada, Ebre delta, on 2.10 (Cristian Jensen et al). Later seen by more people (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé; Daniel Roca et al) but not relocated on 3.10. See two thumbnails here and a photo below (C.Jensen /Audouin Birding Tours)

(2) Lleida/Huesca. There was a juvenile/1w at Fondo de Llitera ricefields, Lleida and Huesca border on 12.10 (Marc Gàlvez),Seen again on 15.10 (Sergi Sales, Eva Reñé, Enric Morera, C.Vilanova & Sergi Sales) not on 16.10 (R.Gutiérrez, J.Arbonés) but again on 17.10 (Marc Gàlvez)and 18.10 (Steve West) and 19.10 (Vittorio Pedrocchi). The bird moves from Fraga municipality to Aitona part of the ricefields thus scoring for both provinces and areas. On 23.10 it was in the Huesca part (Juan Antonio Novales y Alberto Bueno). The Aragon record becomes the 1st for the region.

(1) Girona The bird found on 29.9 at Estany del Cortalet, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona was still there on 2.9 (Fran Trabalon, Helena Rivera , Àlex Ollé, Mireia Jiménez, Laura Font) and 3.9 (Toni Alonso). (2) Murcia A juvenile bird was seen on 10.10 at Salinas de Marchamalo, Mar Menor, Murcia (Antonio Jesus Hernandez Navarro; Richard Howard)

(1-2) A Coruña. Two were seen on migration from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, on 6.10 (David Martínez Lago y Ricardo Hevia)

Baltic Gull Larus fuscus fuscus (1,2,3,4)
(1) Ciudad Real On 23.10, a bird ringed in Finland carrying PVC ring C·AC0 was seen at Alcazar de San Juan, Ciudad Real (Gabriel Martín). This individual had been seen in the area the last 24.2.2010, therefore it's returning to its wintering area for another season. Two Norwegian ringed birds claimed to be fuscus too were also present in the area (G.Martín).

(2) Huelva On 21.10, a Baltic-type bird was seen at Marismas del Odiel, Huelva (Paco Chiclana)

(3) Madrid On 11.10 an adult Baltic-type bird was seen at VRSU de Colmenar Viejo, Madrid (Delfín González).See a thumbnail here.

(1-2) Cádiz There was an adult with a chick on 6.10 at estuario del rio Palmenos, Algeciras, Cádiz. The adult was ringed with white PVC and black letters 'B51' (John Wright).

Cádiz There were 13 at Bolonia, Cádiz on 7.10 (Bob Wright et al.)

Yellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus (1,2,3,4,5,6)
Girona One was ringed at Vall de Montjoi, Cap de Creus, Girona on 11.10 ( Miguel Ángel Fuentes, Gerard Dalmau, Alba Casals, Elisabet Tetas, Anna Mallol, Gabriel de Jesús, Jordi Bermejo; Joan Ventura). (2) Bizkaia. One was seen entering from the sea and reaching an urban park at Santurtzi, Bizkaia on 10.10 (Sergi Sales)

(1-3) Asturies On 2.10 there were 3 at cabo Peñes, Gozón, Asturies (Xuan Cortés).
(4-5) Cantabria On 7.10 there were 2 at Cabo Quintres, Cantabria (Ángel Ruiz Elizalde). From March 2005 this webpage only includes records of birds needing homologation by CR/SEO. For other local rarities contact local bird reports or records committees. See here those rarities only for the Canary Islands also dealt by CR/SEO. Changes in application to the rarity list from January 2006. New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex, Sterna bengalensis and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and are not be included from 2006.

Recent reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent.Photos could be cropped for editorial reasons.Gibraltar news are included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with anew icon. We would welcome to receive a spare copy of those journals using these news for commercial purposes. Contact RG at address at the front page.
