Presumed hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta (1,2)
(1) Alicante. There was a white-headed grey bird at Santa Pola saltpans, Alicante, on 9.7 (Sergio Arroyo; Malcolm Palmer)

(2) Barcelona. The bird seen intermitently in the Llobregat delta, Barcelona since early this year was seen again at Filipines marsh, Remolar-Filipines Nature Reserve, Viladecans, Barcelona on 19.7 (Eio Ramón). See two photos below (Eio Ramón).

Lesser Flamingo Phoenicopterus minor (1-7) CONFIRMED BREEDING
(1-7) Málaga. In 2014 there have been three breeding pairs at Fuentedepiedra lagoon according to official sources of Andalucía government (R.Domíguez et al/ Junta de Andalucía). Of those, one chick was trapped and ringed on 19.7.2014 during the flamingo ringing operation in the lagoon (J.A. Sarry et al). Details on ring having been asked and expected to come.

Rüppell's Vulture Gyps rueppellii (1,2-3,4)
(1) Cádiz. There was a bird on 7.7 at Cerro del Tesoro, seen flying towards Cabrito, Tarifa, Cádiz (Fernando Goytre).

(2-3) Cádiz. There were two over Cazalla, Tarifa on 24.7 (Richard Banham, Edward Eyles)

(4) Cádiz. On 31.7 a bird was seen at Cazalla, Tarifa, Cádiz (Álex Colorado, Yeray Seminario, Alejandro Onrubia et al).

Lanner Falco biarmicus (1,2)
(1) Cádiz. There was a bird on 19.7at Cazalla, Tarifa (Andrés de la Cruz).

(2) Gibraltar. A juvenile was brought into recovery at Gibraltar recovery center on 25.7 when found at the airfield in bad condition. It survived into August (Vincent Robba / GONHS).

Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus (1)
(1) Tarragona. The bird found on 4.6 at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona, was seen again on 4.7, a month later at the same area (Jordi Martí-Aledo). This bird was seen again on 16.7 (Jordi Martí-Aledo).

Lesser Yellowlegs Tringa flavipes (1)
(1) Murcia. There was a bird at EDAR Cabezo Beaza, Murcia on 28.7 (Raquel Abellán, Conrado Requena et al). See a record shot and more information in Spanish in the author blog here.

Wilson's Phalarope Phalaropus tricolor (1)
1) Tarragona. On 29.7 a bird, probably a 2cy, was seen at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Jordi Martí-Aledo). See two photos below.

Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus (1,2,3,4,5-6)
1) Cádiz. On 18.7 there was an adult at Salinas de Bonanza, Cádiz (Ángel Luis Sánchez, Ángel Sánchez). See a thumbnail here (Ángel Luís Sánchez).

(2) Tarragona. There was a bird at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 18.7 (Jordi Martí-Aledo). This bird was still around on 29.7 (Jordi Martí-Aledo) and 30.7 (Jordi Martí-Aledo, Ricard Gutiérrez), when photographed: see a photo below and thumbnails here.

(3) Alicante. A bird was seen and photographed on 25.7 at Salinas de Santa Pola, Alicante (Jacobo Ramos). See a photo below and thumbnail here.

(4) Tarragona. There was a bird on 23.7 at Filtre verd de les Olles, L'Ampolla, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Manolo Sánchez Blanch Not seen subsequently.

(5-6) Tarragona. Besides bird (2), two more non-juvenile individuals were seen at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 30.7 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Jordi Martí-Aledo), see a thumbnail here.

Royal Tern Sterna maxima (1)
(1) Huelva . One adult was seen at Odiel marshes, Huelva,on 17.7 (Stef Strik @ See a photo here.

Lesser-crested Tern Sterna bengalensis (1,2,3,4)
(1) Cádiz . On 13.7 there was a bird at Playa de Montijo, Chipiona, Cádiz (Manuel Jiménez, Antonio Acedo, Fabio Di Pietro y Rafa García Costales). It was a pvc ringed bird, trapped and ringed as chick in Lybia in 2012. See two photos below (Rafa García Costales).

(2) Cádiz . On 19.7 a different individual from the featured above was seen at Playa de Montijo, Chipiona, Cádiz (Jesús Sánchez Cidoncha Isabel Gonzalez Alcantara). See a photo below (Jesús Sánchez Cidoncha).

(3) Cádiz . On 24.7 an individual was seen at Playa del Palmar, Véjer de la Frontera, Cádiz (Diego Peinazo).

(4) Cádiz . On 22.7 there was an adult at Los Lances beach, Tarifa (Brad Robson).

Elegant-like Tern Sterna cf elegans (1,2-4,5-6) CONFIRMED BREEDING
(1) Murcia . The bird found on 29.6 at San Pedro del Pinatar saltpans, Murcia was seen and photographed again on 4.7 (Richard Howard). See a thumbnail here.The bird was seen again on 7.7 (Richard Howard). See a photo below.

(2-4) Valencia . A pair has bred in Racó de l'Olla, l'Albufera de València on 2014, producing one juvenile (see a photo below, J.I.Dies): on 14.7 the two adults and the juvenile were reported (J.I.Dies,M. Chardí, I.Ruiz, G.García). Juvenile and female seen and photographed again, see below, on 17.7 and present still on 20.7 (J.I.Dies). Read more on the case in Birding Albufera here. (5-6) Cádiz . Two birds were seen on 23.7.2014 at Salinas de la Tapa, Cádiz (Rafael García Costales).It is not yet clear if they might be some of the above birds.

Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii (1,2,3,4-5,6)
(1) Cádiz . There was an adult at Playa de Montijo, Chipiona, Cádiz (Antonio Acedo y Fabio Di Pietro).

(2) Cádiz . There was a bird on 18.7 at Punta de los Saboneses, El Puerto de Santa Maria, Cádiz (José Juan Díaz; Rafa García Costales)

(3) Valencia . On 18.7 an adult was seen at Racó de l'Olla, L'Albufera de València (J.I. Dies, M.Chardí, I. Ruiz, G.García). See a photo below and thumbnails here. The bird remained on 19.7 early morning but not later (Bosco Dies, Toni Alcocer). It was relocated on 23.7 at the same site: Racó de l'Olla, l'Albufera de València (J.Ignacio Dies, Miquel Chardí).

(4-5) Huelva . There were two at Espigón Juan Carlos I, Huelva, on 23.7 (Paco Chiclana)

n(6) Cádiz . On 31.7 a first summer was seen at Punta Saboneses, Río San Pedro. Puerto Santa María, Cádiz (José María Zapata)

Garden Bulbul Pycnonotus barbatus (1-2)
(1-2) Cádiz . The birds that have bred at Tarifa, Cádiz, are still around: on 3.7 one was seen around 09:20 h (Emilia Jiménez Vaquero) and later at 11h two were seen altogether (Pablo Santonja). Both birds were still present on 13.7, when heard singing at Tarifa(José Luís Garzón, Nerea Franco, Pablo Santonja & Álex Colorado). On 23.7 the two individuals were seen again at Tarifa, Cádiz (Ángel Sánchez, Ángel Luís Sánchez)

Pied Crow Corvus albus (1)
(1) Ceuta . On 5.7 there was an adult at Punta del Desnarigado, Ceuta (Joaquín López).

Such records should be submitted to Juan Antonio Lorenzo at canarias @** Canarian records of species which are rarities nationwide are included in the main text in violet type.*** Ringed birds in Spain have to be submitted and accepted by CR/SEO-BirdLife, according to Environment Ministery of Spain and the authonomous communities agreements, to be accepted as valid ringings in the national database. Otherwise, non submitted or rejected records will be deleted and ringings will not be included in national or international databases. Ringers not submitting rare bird ringings will be listed. Submitting ringing records is hence specially encouraged as a contribution to global bird knowledge..

From March 2005 this webpage only includes records of birds needing homologation by CR/SEO. For other local rarities contact local bird reports or records committees. See here those rarities only for the Canary Islands also dealt by CR/SEO. Changes in application to the rarity list from January 2006. New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex, Sterna bengalensis and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and are not be included from 2006.

Recent reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent.Photos could be cropped for editorial reasons.Gibraltar news are included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with anew icon.
