Ring-necked Duck Aythya collaris (1)
(1) Navarra. One drake was found on 24.8 at Embalse de las Cañas, Viana, Navarra (David Arranz, Jesús Ucha, Ismael García et al). See a thumbnail here. The bird remained in the reservoir on 28.8 (Gorka Gorospe).

(1) A Coruña. First of the season was seen on 16.8 from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia (Antonio Sandoval).

(1) Lanzarote. One was seen on 16.8 at Banco de la Concepcíón, Lanzarote, Canary Islands (Lanzarote Pelagics).

Western Reef Egret Egretta gularis gularis (1)
(1) Tarragona. There was a dark phase individual at Canal Vell lagoon, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona, on 10.8 (Paco Castro, Paco Lopo, Miquel Angel Garcia, Bernat Garcia, Àlex Estellé). The bird was relocated on 20.8 entering the roost at dusk at Canal Vell lagoon, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Cristian Jensen, Alex Estellé)

Presumed hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta (1,2,3,4)
(1) Alicante. The hybrib bird seen last July was still present at Santa Pola saltpans, Alicante, on 9.8 (J.M. Pérez-García, S. Pérez-López).

(2) Valencia. There was one pale bird spotted dark on 11.8 at Tancat de Milia, Sollana PN.Albufera, València (Pedro Marín). See a photo below and thumbnail here.

(3) Valencia. There was a dark white-headed bird at Reserva Natural del Tancat de la Ratlla, Albufera de València, on 20.8 (Pau Lucio). See two photos below and two thumbnails here.This individual was seen again on 24.8 (Miguel Piera/GOTUR @birdingalbuferaes).

(4) Barcelona. The bird seen intermitently in the Llobregat delta, Barcelona since early this year was seen again this time at Riera Roja, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Barcelona on 24.8 (Eio Ramón). See two photos below (Eio Ramón).

Lesser Flamingo Phoenicopterus minor (1-3) CONFIRMED BREEDING
(1-3) Málaga. Three birds of those that have bred this year at Fuentedepiedra lagoon, Málaga, were seen and photographed on 17.8. See a thumbnail here or the same in rarebirdspain twitter (Alan Jones et al). One was still around on 24.8 (Cristian Osorio). Two individuals were recorded at the same site on 26.8 (Nick Littlewood).

(1) Cádiz. On 5.8 an individual was seen from Tarifa, Cádiz (Carlos Torralvo/MIGRES)

(2) Cádiz. On 18.8.2014 a bird was seen at Cazalla,Tarifa, Cádiz (Carlos Torralvo/Fundación Migres).
(3-4) Cádiz. On 22.8.2014 a bird was seen at La Ahumada, Tarifa, Cádiz (Alexandre Justo). There were two there on 23.8 (Antonio Luis Casas)

(5-6) Cádiz. On 23.8 one individual was at Sierra de Fates, Tarifa, Cádiz, and two on 24.8 (J.A.Sarry).

(7) Cádiz. On 24.8 a bird was seen flying towards La Ahumada, and it was moulting the 6th or 7th primary (Antonio Luis Casas)

Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus (1)
(1) Navarra. On 31.8 a juvenile was seen at Lindus, Navarra (Gontzal Deán)

Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus (1,2,3)
(1) Cádiz. On 3.8 a juvenile was seen at Cazalla, Tarifa (Rafa Benjumea, Andrés de la Cruz y Julio Roldán et al). See two thumbnails here (Rafa Benjumea / Ecotono birding).

(2) Cádiz. On 6.8 a juvenile was reported at Los Alcornocales Natural Park, Cádiz (@NBirder).

(3) Cádiz. On 7.8 an individual was at Cazalla, Tarifa, Cádiz (David Cuenca, José Luís Garzón,Unai Fuentes & Álex Colorado)

Greater/Lesser Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga/pomarina (1)
(1) Cádiz. On 22.8 an unidentified Spotted Eagle was seen at La Ahumada, Tarifa, Cádiz (Alexandre Justo)

Lanner Falco biarmicus (1,2)
(1) Gibraltar. The juvenile brought into recovery at Gibraltar recovery center on 2.7 continued there by 6.8 and doing well (Vincent Robba via Charles Pérez / GONHS). See a thumbnail here (Vincent Robba/GONHS).The bird was well recovered on 15.8 and its release is expected for 18.8 week. See a photo below

(2) Gibraltar. There was a juvenile flying North over Gibraltar on 17:30 of 13.8 (Gilbert González/GONHS).

Pacific Golden Plover Pluvialis fulva (1,2)
(1) Tarragona. There was an adult at Migjorn fields on 3.8 morning (David Bigas). It was later seen by more observers, when photographed (Marc Gàlvez, José Guerra, Josep Tantull, Roser Solé; Josep Crusafont, Albert Cama, Ricard Gutiérrez). See a photo below (Josep Tantull). This bird might have arrived the day before at dusk when a Golden Plover (P.apricaria), present intermitently since late July (D.Bigas was also present (R.Gutiérrez). The Pacific Golden Plover remained in the area some days: 4.8 (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé, Marc Gàlvez, José Guerra), 5.8 (Miquel Bonet and 8.8 (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé). (2) Tarragona. There was an adult at Migjorn fields on 27.8 (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé). It was photographed and underwing was clearly checked. See a photo below. White-rumped Sandpiper Calidris fuscicollis (1)
(1) Tarragona. One was found on 14.8 at IRTA ricefields, Amposta, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé). See two photos below. News were spread and a number of observers could see the bird. On the following days it was relocated, first at the same field, then in a nearby also experimental ricefield: 15.8 (Lluís Gustamante), 16.8 (Bernat Iglesias, Aleix Comas; José Guerra, Javier Train et al). Later relocated at Cambra Arrossera del Montsià experimental ricefields, Amposta, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Sofia Rivaes, Xavier Riera, Mònica Martí, Lídia Pérez).The bird was seen a few days more at the initial site: 17.8 (Javier Train et al), see a photo below; 18.8 (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé), 19.8 (Moisés Moreno, Xavier Escobar; Ricard Gutiérrez, see a photo below) and 20.8 (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé), when it was last seen.

Pectoral Sandpiper Calidris melanotos (1,2)
(1) Valencia. An adult, the 1st of the season, was seen on 22.8 at RN La Ratlla, Silla, Albufera de València (Bosco Dies).More information at Birding Albufera website here.

(2) Valencia. A 2nd adult, a different bird, was seen at Reserva Natural de la Milia, Sollana, Albufera de València on 24.8 (D. Mons y B. Dies). This bird was seen again on 25.8 (Maties Rebassa, Daniel Mons, Vicente Llorens i Bosco Dies) and 28.8 (D.Mons y B.Dies) while on 30.8 both birds (1) and (2) were relocated (Toni Alcocer, Bosco Dies, Daniel Mons, Pedro Marín).

Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus (1,2)
(1) Valencia. There was one at Marjal dels Moros, Sagunt, Valencia on 24.8 (Manolo García-Tarrasón, Fran Lloris, José Miguel Aguilar). See a thumbnail here and a photo below (Manolo García-Tarrasón).

(2) Tarragona. The presumably oversummering bird at Punta de la Banya, Tarragona, was seen again on 25.8 (Jordi Martí-Aledo, Carles Domingo).

Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus (1-3,4,5-6,7)
(1-3) Tarragona. The three birds seen in late July were seen again at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 1.8. At least one remained there on 2.8 (Jordi Martí-Aledo).Two of them remained on 3.8 at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Jordi Marti-Aledo).See two photos below (Jordi Martí-Aledo). (4) Girona. There was one on 12.8 at Estany d'Europa, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (Rosa Matesanz). Later seen by more authors. See a photo below (Rosa Matesanz). The bird remained there on 16.8 (Marc Casas @

(5-6) Cádiz. There was one on 5.8 (Luis Sitges, Antonio Miguel) then two on 17.8, at Bonanza saltpans, Cádiz (Phil Chantler, Jack Chantler and Richard Heading).

(7) Murcia. There was a juvenile on 28.8 at Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar, Murcia (Richard Howard)

Elegant-like Tern Sterna cf elegans (1,2,3-4)
(1) Tarragona . On 8.8 an adult was seen at Tarragona harbour, Tarragona (Albert Cama). See a photo below and a thumbnail here.

(2) Cádiz . On 22.8 a bird was seen at Playa de Santa Catalina, El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz (José Manuel Franco),

(3-4) Cádiz . On 22.8 an adult and a juvenile were seen at Salinas de la Tapa, Cádiz (Rafael García Costales). It is not clear if birds (1) and (2) might be one of these. See a photo below and thumbnail here.

Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii (1,2,3-5)
(1) Valencia .The bird found on 18.7 at Racó de l'Olla, L'Albufera de València was seen again on 11.8 (J.I. Dies, R. Fresneda, M. Chardí, G. García, I. Ruiz, J. Ruiz). See a photo below and read more on the species at Birding Albufera here.

(2) A Coruña. One was seen on 15.8 from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia (Antonio Sandoval, Ricardo Hevia).

(3-5) Cádiz. There were three on 22.8 at Salinas de la Tapa, Cádiz (Rafael García Costales).

Laughing Dove Streptopelia senegalensis (1)
(1) Málaga . On 1.8 there was a bird between Parador de Golf - Urbanización Los Álamos, Torremolinos, Málaga (Andy Paterson).

Garden Bulbul Pycnonotus barbatus (1-2,3-4)
(1-2) Cádiz . The birds that have bred at Tarifa, Cádiz were seen again: on 7.8 there were two still adound Tarifa, Cádiz (Unai Fuentes, Alfonso Rodrigo, Álex Colorado). On 22.8 one of these was seen but in company of two unringed juveniles, so it seems they have bred again on 2014 (Emilia M. Jiménez). One ringed bird seen again on 28.8 with two juveniles. (3-4) Cádiz. Two unringed juveniles were seen in company of one of the birds above (ringed) on 22.8 at Tarifa, Cádiz. Possible 3rd breeding record after 2013 success. 2013 chicks were ringed (Emilia M.Jiménez). These birds were seen again on 28.8 (David Fernández). See a photo below.

Citrine Wagtail Motacilla citreola (1)
(1) Pontevedra . There was a juvenile on 16.8 at Xunqueira do Lagares, Vigo (David Rodríguez Vieites), the 3rd for Galicia.

Otherwise, non submitted or rejected records will be deleted and ringings will not be included in national or international databases. Ringers not submitting rare bird ringings will be listed. Submitting ringing records is hence specially encouraged as a contribution to global bird knowledge.

From March 2005 this webpage only includes records of birds needing homologation by CR/SEO. For other local rarities contact local bird reports or records committees. See here those rarities only for the Canary Islands also dealt by CR/SEO. Changes in application to the rarity list from January 2006. New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex, Sterna bengalensis and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and are not be included from 2006.

Recent reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent.Photos could be cropped for editorial reasons.Gibraltar news are included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with anew icon.
