Palle-bellied Brent Goose Branta bernicla hrota (1-2,3-6)
(1-2) Pontevedra. There was a 1w at Enseada de O Vao, O Grove, Pontevedra on 4.11 (Xurxo Piñeiro @eBird; Gustavo Ferreiro @eBird). On 13.11 there were two at the same place (Roi Cuba @eBird).

(3-6) Pontevedra. A group of four were seen at Ensenada de San Simón, seen from Pedra dos Caralletes and Arcade harbour on 11.11. One was ringed (left leg blue 'T', right, red 'N' (Gustavo Ferreiro, Xurxo Piñeiro, Marián Pujol @eBird).

Bean Goose Anser fabalis (1)
(1) Palencia. The bird seen at Laguna de Boada, Boada de Campos, Palencia on 21.10 continued there on 3.11 (Rafael Hermosilla).

Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus (1,2,3,4-9) INFLUX

(1) A Coruña. The 1w bird found at Ria do Burgo, A Coruña on 29.10 was still there on 1.11 (Xosé Manoel Carregal @eBird) and on 18.11 (Manuel Xestoso @eBird). The bird at Ria do Burgo continued there on 29.11 (Bibiana Lorenzo @eBird).

(2) A Coruña. On 30.10 there were 7 birds at Laguna de Traba, Laxe, A Coruña but on 1.11 only one 1w remained (Ramsés Pérez @eBird). On 12.11 it was still there (Xabier Vázquez @eBird) and on 16.11 too (Roberto Bao

(3) Asturies. On 2.11 a bird was seen at Ensenada de la Linera, Salías, Ria del Eo, Asturias (Gilberto S. Jardón). See two photos below and a thumbnail here. On 6.11 it was near Aldea el Esquilo, Ria del Eo (Luís Javier Rodríguez @eBird) and on 10.10 again at la Linera (Óscar Chao @eBird).

(4-9) Asturies. Six were seen in flight over Bañugues, Asturias, on 4.11 (Rubén Fernández @eBird).

(1) Fuerteventura. On 25.11 a bird f/1w was seen at Caleta de Fuste Golf Course, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands (Uca Díaz).

Bufflehead Bucephala albeola (1)
(1) A Coruña. A male was found in a rainy day at laguna de Muro, Porto do Son, A Coruña on 1.11 (Ana Pérez, José Ramón Gómez). See thumbnails here. The bird behaved wild and showed no rings. On 2.11 it was seen again and photographed too (José Alberto Fernández Ugarte; José Luís Lorenzo 'Colón). See photos below. On 3.11 it was still there (Miguel MG @eBird). Still there on 5.11 (Óscar Santomé, Víctor Cabaleiro).The bird was seen again on 13.11 (Manuel Xestoso @eBird), 14.11 (Luis Javier Rodríguez @eBird) and 16.11 (David Calleja @eBird). Still there on 26.11 (Xabier Vázquez Pumariño @eBird).

(1) A Coruña. The bird 1y/female found at Traba lagoon, Laxe, A Coruña on 30.10 was still there on 1.11 (José Luís Rabuñal; Ramsés Pérez @eBird) and 2.11 (José Alberto Fernández Ugarte). On 12.11 it was still there (Xabier Vázquez @eBird).

Smew Mergellus albellus (1,2)
(1) Zaragoza. A bird was found at estanca del Gancho, Ejea de los Caballeros, Zaragoza on 21.11 (Juan Carlos Albero), see a photo below. Seen later by more authors (Alfredo Sánchez Galán, Aitor Mora, José Maria Canudo @eBird) and still there on 22.11 (Jesús Mari Lekuona, Sergio González, Luis Gracia, @eBird), 24.11 (Gabriel Lorenzo; Marco Antonio Escudero @eBird, Eduardo Gil @eBird). On 24.11 (Héctor Bintanel @eBird) and 27.11 (Enrique Pelayo @eBird) the bird continued at Estanca de El Gancho, Zaragoza. .

On 23.11 a 1w/female bird was found at El Clot, l’Encanyissada, Amposta, Delta de l’Ebre, Tarragona (Ursula Rinas, Frank Hessing Seen again on 24.11 (Ursula Rinas, Frank Hessing; Jaume Campderròs, Josep Tantull, Roser Solé, Manolo Sánchez Blanch) and on 25.11 too (Daniel Roca; Joan M.Díaz Tomas). The Smew continued at l’Encanyissada on 26.11 (Màrius Domingo, Pau García Campderròs, Xavier Parra; Sergi Sales), 27.11 (Javier Subirats; Enric Fernández @eBird), 28.11 (Gabri de Jesús), 29.11 (Xavier Parra, Vicente Francisco Tamarit; Sergi Sales, Enric Morera – photo enclosed-)..

(1) A Coruña. A bird that had been seen at Fervenza reservoir, A Coruña on 28.11 (Manolo Carregal @ was was ringed as seen when photographed on 8.11 (Fernando Pereiras), see a thumbnail here, and coming from Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña. See another thumbnail here where it shows the plàstic Orange ring (Carlos Luciarte). Distance from Encoro Da Fervenza, A Coruña to Santiago de Compostela is c.44 km.


Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena (1,2,3)
(1) Lugo. A bird found on 18.11 at Ensenada de Covas, Ria de Viveiro, Lugo (Manolo Carregal, Graciela Fernández) was still there on 24.11 (David Calleja @eBird).

topoAFRICAN DWARF BITTERN Ixobrychus sturmii (1) 5th for Canaries & Spain, 6th for the WP
(1) Fuerteventura. The bird found on 1.12.2017 at Rio Cabras gorge, SE of of Tesjuate, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands (28°28'32.7"N 13°54'11.0"W) and not reported since August 2018, then relocated at the same barranco on 24.10 was seen again on 2.11 (Uca Díaz). (1) Gran Canaria - Fuerteventura. On 11.11 an immature landed at sea on a yatch Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, closer to the former (Jesús Losada). See a video at his facebook page here and a vidcap below.

Lesser Spotted Eagle Clanga pomarina (1)
(1) Cádiz. A bird was seen at La Janda, Cádiz, on 4.11, a potential intergrade with clanga genes (Javi Elorriaga @eBird). On 16.11 it was seen again (Víctor Manuel Porras @eBird)and on 23.11 too (Víctor Manuel Porras @eBird)to 26.11 (Víctor Manuel Porras @eBird).

(1) Alicante. The Estonian satellite-tagged eagle was at Santa Águeda, El Fondo, Elx, Alacant on 2.11 (Ian Hayes). See a photo below.

(1) Fuerteventura. On 17.11 an injured bird was seen and photographed in N Fuerteventura (Noelia Garcia, Eliseo Reyes/ SOC), see a photo below (Eliseo Reyes). On 18.11 it could be captured and brought to an official recovery center, but it did not survived due to its injuries (Uca Díaz).

Sociable Plover Vanellus gregarius (1,2,3,4)
Cádiz. The 1w bird found on 20.10 at La Janda, Cádiz was seen again on 1.11 (Javier Elorriaga, Yeray Seminario/ Birding the Strait @eBird) and 3.11 (Rafael García @eBird; Juan Miguel González, Juan Ramírez, Andrés de la Cruz @eBird). The Plover was seen again on 13.11 (Julio Ortega, Javi Elorriaga, Sergio Briones @eBird) and 15.11 (Yeray Seminario, Alexandre Justo @eBird) to 16.11 (J.A. Sarry again on 19.11 (Julio Ortega, A J Sepúlveda @eBird). The bird was seen again on 22.11 (Manuel Schweizer and 24.11 (José Luís Garzón @eBird).

(2-3) Cádiz. Another bird was found on 13.11 at La Janda, Cádiz (Javi Elorriaga @eBird). The observer states: "Two individuals seen within 30 minutes 5km appart from each other, both birds show different individual marking on head pattern and breast. Both are first winter birds. One of them is present for some weeks and I got lenghty views in 4 different ocasions. Both within Northern Lapwing groups. The one is the picture is the "new bird"."The two birds were seen again on 22.11 (Manuel Schweizer and on 23.11 (Javier Elorriaga, Yeray Seminario / Birding the Strait @eBird). A bird was seen on 26.11 (Juan Ramírez @eBird) and an adult was at La Janda on 28.11 (Víctor Manuel Porras @eBird) and one (not aged) on 29.11 (Mick Richardson @eBird) .

(4) Badajoz. On 24.11 a bird was seen at Cabeza del Buey, Badajoz (Corné van den Bosch, Hans Hut @CREX Extremadura website).

Lesser Yellowlegs Tringa flavipes (1)
(1) Badajoz . On 24.11 a birds was found between Puebla de Alcollarin y Villar de Rena, near Ex 354 road (Steve Hutchinson @ CREX Extremadura website).

American Herring Gull Larus smithsonianus (1) RETURNING INDIVIDUAL
A Coruña. The adult American Herring Gull locally named 'Barrilete' returned for another winter to Nemiña beach, Muxia, A Coruña on 5.11 (Fernando Pereiras). See a thumbnail here.

Baltic Gull Larus fuscus fuscus (1)
(1) Gipuzkoa . A 1w ringed in a pure colony was found on 24.11 at Getaria, Gipuzkoa (Gorka Ocio, Asier Aldalur, Eneko Azkue, Theo y Mars Muusse). Still there on 25.11 (Oscar Carazo, Alfredo Valiente, see a photo below).

(1) Tarragona . The 2nd for Catalunya, a 1w presumed female was found on 22.11 at Tancada marshes, Amposta, Delta de l’Ebre, Tarragona (Vicente Francisco Tamarit). See three photos below. (1-4) Barcelona. There are up to 4 birds at Baix Llobregat comarca. On 4.11 two birds were seen in the vicinity of the Alcampo commercial center, at Sant Boi de Llobregat, Barcelona (Pau Ortega On 6.11 a bird was seen at Cal Nani, El Prat de Llobregat (Ricard Marcos There were four a Cal Lluquer, El Prat de Llobregat on 20.11 (Javier Notario @eBird) and near Cal Negre, also El Prat, on 22.11 (Raúl Bastida were two at Cal Nani, El Prat de Llobregat, on 27.11 (Pau Esteban and on 29.11 too (Biel Bernat)..

Siberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita tristis (1,2,3,4)
(1) Gipuzkoa.
On 3.11 a bird was seen at Txingudi, Plaiaundi, Gipuzkoa (Enrique Rossignol @eBird).

(2) Valencia. On 4.11 a bird was seen and heard at Barranco del Poyo, Albufera de València, València (Gregorio Chaguaceda @eBird).

(3) Menorca. On 7.11 a bird showing characters of tristis was seen at Maó, Menorca (Gala Lligoña, Roman Piris).

(4) Barcelona. A bird showing some characters of tristis was seen and photographed at Riera de Sant Climent, Viladecans, Delta del Llobregat, Barcelona on 24.11 (Eio Ramón). See photos below.

Hume's Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus humei (1,2)
(1) Barcelona.
On 4.11 a bird showing characters of humei was seen,not heard, at Barcelona botanical gardens, just 10 m from the place where another (this one heard too) was seen in 2016 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Helena Arbonés). See a record photo below. In the area there was a ringed Yellow-browed Warbler too.On 5.11 a 'pale two barred' Phylloscopus was seen in the area but proper views were not obtained (Sergi Sales).

(2) Barcelona. On 22.11 morning a bird was found at Riera de Sant Climent, Viladecans, Delta del Llobregat, Barcelona (Ferran López). See two photos below. Seen again in the afternoon (Jana Marco, Oriol Palau). On 23.11 it was seen again (Ferran López) and on 24.11 a large number of observers saw and heard it (Silvia Roi, Aitor Mora, José Maria Canudo, Javier Train, Luis Gracia, Alfredo Sánchez, Juan Carlos Albero, Guillermo Rodríguez, Antonio Rodríguez Sinovas, Eio Ramón –see photos below-, Quique Carballal, Javier Valladares, Ricard Gutiérrez – see sonogram below-, Xavier Parra and others). Seen again on 25.11 (Joan Pujol, Marc Noguera et al). The bird at Riera de Sant Climent was seen and heard again on 27.11 (Marc Gàlvez @eBird), 28.11 (Martí Franch) and 30.11 (Carles Oliver)..

The showing features of oriental forms seen at Txingudi--Plaiaundi, Gipuzkoa from 23.10 was seen again on 1.11 (David Santamaria, Itziar Gutiérrez, José F. Esparcia @eBird

(2) Cádiz. A possible oriental bird was seen on 1.11 at Jardín Celestino Mutis, Cádiz (Rafael García, Javier Salcedo @eBird). See thumbnails here.

Red-flanked Bluetail Tarsiger cyanurus (1,2)
(1) Illes Balears. Mallorca.
On 6.11 a bird was found at Port de Pollença, Mallorca, Illes Balears (Cristina Fiol). Seen later by more authors (Maties Rebassa). Still present on 7.11 (Steve Nicoll, Javier Quintana, Xesca Riera i Carles López-Jurado). 2nd record for the Balearic Islands.

On 22.11 a bird was reported from Sierra del Perdón, Navarra (Jesús Mari Lekuona).

(1) Cádiz.
On 6.11 a bird was found at Parque Princesa Sofía. La Línea de la Concepción, Cádiz (David Cuenca). See two thumbnails here. On 7.11 it was still there (Álex Colorado). See a photo below.

Eastern Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava tschutschensis (1) PUTATIVE 1ST FOR SPAIN
(1) Barcelona .
A bird was seen and heard at Cal Tet, El Prat de Llobregat, Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 19.11 (Ferran López). Its call was heard many times showing a mixture of usual local flava and a rasping call close to that of Citrine Wagtail twice. One of the calls can be taped with Ferran’s smartphone. On 20.11 the bird continued in the area (Ferran López, José Luís Copete) and more quality recordings are obtained which prove the id of the individual (Ferran López @ Llobregat Delta bird news blog). (1-2) Cantabria.
There were two birds at Langre, Cantabria on 1.11 (Guillermo Rodríguez @ Anuario Ornitológico de Cantabria).

White gulls are not included since 1.12.2017 nor Anser brachyrhynchus, Aythya collaris, Egretta gularis × garzetta, Gyps rueppellii, Circus macrourus, Calidris melanotos, Calidris subruficollis, Phalaropus lobatus, Larus cachinnans, Larus glaucoides glaucoides, Larus hyperboreus, Sterna bengalensis, Sterna dougallii, Motacilla citreola and Phylloscopus inornatus.

Recent reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain, as known from year 2000 boundaries, which are both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page can be used by SEO/BirdLife RC or other rarities committees for their knowledge if enough substantiated. Inclusion in this page does not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind. The Bufflehead at Galicia, the day it was found (José Ramón Gómez)
The Hooded Merganser at Embalse de A Fervenza (above, Fernando Pereiras) and below at Santiago de Compostela urban park (Carlos Luciartes). The sighting of the Bufflehead raised some hopes that the bird could be a genuine vagrant but the ring, and the fact that the Santiago bird had left the area the previous days put it into the E list.
