Red-throated Diver Gavia stellata. Late record: a bird was at Hondarribia pier, Txingudi bay, Gipuzkoa on 28.4 (David Calleja)
Fulmar Fulmarus glacialis. A bird was seen flying W off Estaca de Vares, A Coruña, Galicia, on 14.4 (Pablo Gutiérrez y Antonio Gutiérrez)One bird was seen 1/2 mile off cabo Higer, Hondarribia, Gipuzkoa on 26.4 (David Calleja).
Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus. Largest reported flock this year. 2500 birds were in a single flock off Magarola lagoon, Llobregat delta, on 27.4 (J.Jofre, J.Becarés, X.Larruy).
Great White Egret Egretta alba. One bird was at S'Albufereta de Mallorca, Balearics, on 1.4 (Maties Rebassa). See a thumbnail of the bird seen at Rincon del Pescador, Doñana in late march here.Two birds were at Aiguamolls de l'Empordà NP on 1.4 (Manuel Caamaño)There was one at Salobrar de Campos, Mallorca, on 7.4 (M.Jiménez, JM Tapia, S.Quintanilla, L.Ventoso)One bird was at Llobregat delta, Barcelona, on 12.4 (Michael Carmody). The bird from Mallorca (see above) was still there on 13.4 and 27.4 (Maties Rebassa).There were 2 at Marjal del Moro, Sagunt, València, on 21.4 (F.C. Pavón).A bird in breeding plumage, with black bill and ornamental feathers, was seen from 19-25.4 at Vilanova de la Barca, Lleida (J.Estrada; J.Bonfil). A bird was at Racó de l'Olla, Albufera de València on 25.4 (J.I.Díes). Two more were seen also at Albufera, one carrying branches in a heron breeding colony (...) on 21.4 (F.J.García y Gans). There were 3 near Vilaüt lagoon, PN Aiguamolls on 29.4 (Karmelo de Dios).At el Garxal, PN Delta de l'Ebre, there was 1 on 27.4 with 2 more at El Clot the same day (Bas van de Meulengraaf, Raoul Beunen, Reinoud Vermoolen)
Western Reef Heron* Egretta gularis. There was a bird at Desembocadura del Guadalhorce, Málaga on 1.4 (Andy Paterson)Another different bird was seen on 28.4 (Andy Paterson). Given details provided the hypothesis of hybrid birds should not be discarded (ed.comment).
Marabou* Leptoptilos crumeniferus.A bird took residence in the mountain village of Montanuy, Huesca (near Catalonia border) between 15-16.4 (Pilar Vila / Escuela Municipal de Montanuy). See thumbnail here. Last year another Marabou lingered around catalan Pyrenees in Spring.
Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. Ther were 3 at Moro Marsh, Sagunt, València on 21.4 (F.C. Pavón). Two were at Laguna de la Nava, Palencia on 24.4 (M.Vélez, S.Guallar, F.Pinto, J.Aja, F.Arce).There were 3 at Matà lagoons, PN Aiguamolls, on 23.4 (J.Martí & L.Salaverri). A bird was at Mata del Fang, Albufera de València, on 25.4 (J.I.Dies) and another the same day at Tancat de la Ratlla, Albufera de València (F.Javier García y Gans).
Sacred Ibis* Threskiornis aethiopicus. A bird was seen at Valdoviño lake, A Coruña, Galicia, on 16.4 (Pablo Gutiérrez y Antonio Gutiérrez)
Ruddy Shelduck* Tadorna ferruginea. One was at laguna de Barillos. Villafáfila, Zamora on 25.4 (F.García Roncero, Alfonso Rodrigo)
Egyptian Goose* Alopochen aegyptiacus. Possible escapes? (D category): 2bird on 10.4 (Lalo Ventoso) and 3 birds at Ses Puntes, S'Albufera de Mallorca on 14.4 (Maties Rebassa).late record: another was at Desembocadura del Guadalhorce, Málaga, on 29.3 (Andy Paterson)
Teal* Anas carolinensis A drake and a bird showing intermediate
characters with Common Teal Anas crecca found on 6-7.3 at
Cortalet lagoon, Parc Natural Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona
Eider Somateria mollissima. The bird found at La Arenilla hide on 16.3 ( Santoña, Cantabria) continued there on 4.4 (J.G.Navedo)and 10.4 (J.Bedia, P.Mazón, F.Arce). One immature male (1st w/summer) was seen on 6.4 amongst 50-60 scoters Melanitta nigra at Baía de la Lanzada (A Lanzada), Ogrobe (O'Grove), Galiza/Galicia (Cosme Damiam Romai)
Hooded Merganser* Lophodytes cucullatus. The bird reported in Tenerife island, Canaries, had left its overwintering area on 1.4 (Eduardo García del Rey). On 16.2 it was photographed again by Rob Fray at El Pinque (which is the same area where it initially was), Tenerife. See new thumbnail here.Last reported sighting was on 11.3 (Keith W.Emmerson).
Red-Footed Falcon Falco vespertinus. A male was seen at les Llaunes, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, on 14.4 (J.L. Copete, Montse Rollán). A female was also at Aiguamolls, at Tres Ponts area, on 27.4 (L.Salaverri and J.Martí).
Little Crake Porzana parva. 2 birds were at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona, on 9.4 with 10 Spotted Crakes P.porzana (S.Sales, J.Martí)One male was seen at Matà area, PN Aiguamolls, on 13.4 (E &S Durand, A.Flitti). A suspected male (could have been also pusilla due to quick observation, was seen at Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta, on 16.4 (J.Castelló).On 28.3 a female bird was reported at Matà area, PN Aiguamolls (L.Gustamente)A male was at Cortalet itinerary, PN Aiguamolls, on 24.4 (J.Martí),
Baillon's Crake Porzana pusilla. One bird was seen at Estany de les Molleroses, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona, on 9.4 (S.Sales)
Crested coot Fulica cristata. See a thumbnail of the bird seen at Zorrobarba, Huelva in late march here.Another was at laguna dulce de Campillos (S of Fuentedepiedra, Málaga) by mid month (X.Piñeiro). Northern record: 2nd Asturies sighting (first in 1992-93): a bird was located at San Andrés reservoir, Xixón from 23.4-2.5 at least (Adríán Vigil Morán, per Elías García Sánchez)
Cream-Coloured Courser* Cursorius cursor. A party of five birds were seen at Guadalhorce river mouth on 28.4 morning. The birds left towards the E direction Almeria (Andy Paterson)
Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis. There were 3-4 birds at Maresma de les Filipines, Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 4.4 (Ricard Gutiérrez, F.López, A.Ramal) and at least one on 5.4 (com.pers to R.Gutiérrez & F.López). See thumbnail here. Another was at El Prat de Llobregat, also Llobregat delta, on 6.4 (Pau Esteban). Six birds seen in PN Aiguamolls, Girona up to 9.4, the last that day (J.Martí)There were 3 at El Matà area, PN Aiguamolls, Girona on 11.4 (S.Sales, T.Montràs, J.Martí).Two at the same place on 15.4 (J.Martí).There were 5 at mas del Matà, PN Aiguamolls on 14.4 (E &S Durand, A.Flitti). At Aiguamolls, there were one at Cortalet on 16.4 (Erkki Valsta), one at Matà area on 19.4 (T.Montràs,L.Salaverri, J.Martí) and 20.4 (L.Salaverri); another at Europa lagoon on 22-23.4 (L.Salaverri, J.Martí) and another at Molleroses area on 22.4 (O.Clarabuch, A.Alonso, J.Martí). FOUR birds were at Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta on 24.4 (F.López; R.Gutiérrez,F.X.Santaeufemia).3 birds were at estany Europa, Aiguamolls on 24.4 (L.Salaverri, J.Martí) . SEVEN birds altogether were at the same area on 25.4 (R.Gutiérrez, F.López et al). 3 were at estany Europa , PN Aiguamolls, on 26-27.4 (L.Salaverri,J.Martí et al)and 28 (Karmelo de Dios). 3 more at basses de Delfià, PN l'Albera, Girona, on 26.4 (L.Salaverri, J.Martí). There were 2 birds at Albufera de Mallorca on 26.4 (Maties Rebassa). At el Garxal, PN Delta de l'Ebre, there were 2 on 27.4 (Bas van de Meulengraaf, Raoul Beunen, Reinoud Vermoolen)
Terek Sandpiper* Xenus cinereus. One was at Tancat de la Ratlla, Albufera de València, on 25.5 (F.Javier García y Gans).
Great Snipe* Gallinago media. A bird was reported from Embalse de Talaván, Talaván, Cáceres as seen in the evening of 12.4.2002 (Joost Reyners)
Sanderling Calidris alba. Extralimital inland record. A bird was at Salina Grande, Villafáfila, Zamora, on 14.4. Last record of that species in the area was from 1993 (M.A.García Matellanes, Alfonso Rodrigo)
Baird's Sandpiper* Calidris bairdii. On 22.4. a bird was found around Doñana area, Huelva (Emmanuel Roy). A search on 23.4 gave no results (P.André Crochet pers.com.)
Temminck's Stint Calidris temminckii. One bird was at Maresma de les Filipines, Llobregat delta, Barcelona on 4-5.4 (Ferran López).A winter plumaged bird was at Tarragona harbour on 19.4 (Albert Cama).A bird was at Besós river mouth on 21.4 (X.Larruy, J.Jofre, J.Becarés) and 22.4 (X.Larruy, D.Perpiñán).One on 26.4 (Bas van de Meulengraaf, Raoul Beunen, Reinoud Vermoolen)and five birds were at estanys del Matà on 27.4 (L.Salaverri, J.Martí).One was at Estany del Matà, PN Aiguamolls, Girona, on 25.4 (Bas van de Meulengraaf, Raoul Beunen, Reinoud Vermoolen)
Long-tailed Skua* Stercorarius longicaudus. An adult was seen migrating from Barceloneta beach, Barcelona on 21.4 (Jarone Pinhassi).One adult was seen flying S off Magarola lagoon, Llobregat delta on 27.4 (X.Larruy). At Cabo de Gata, Almería, there was 1 on 29.4 (Bas van de Meulengraaf, Raoul Beunen, Reinoud Vermoolen)
Ring-billed Gull* Larus delawarensis. A 1st summer was found on 21.4 and seen again on 22.4 at Besós river mouth, Sant Adrià del Besós, Barcelona (Xavier Larruy,D.Perpiñán; JL Copete, R.Servitje, X.Macià, J.Jofre, F.López, J.Castelló). See thumbnail here. Only the fourth-ever record in Catalonia, the last one in 1990.
Little Gull Larus minutus. Largest concentration of the last years. 6000 birds were seen aat Roses bay on 25.4 (L.Salaverri, T.Montràs, J.Martí).
Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii . Two birds were seen at Mallorca during a 45 minutes period on 27.4 (Arthur Stagg). This is the 4th Balearic islands record with previous in 1858, 1965 and 1991
White-winged Black Tern Chlydonias leucopterus. Two birds on 23.4 (L.Salaverri & J.Martí) and a single on 26.4 were at Matà lagoons, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà (T.Montràs, L.Salaverri). Five birds at El Matà on 26.4 (Bas van de Meulengraaf, Raoul Beunen, Reinoud Vermoolen) and Estanys d'Europa, Aiguamolls on 27.4 (L.Salaverri, J.Martí). There were 6 at Albufera de València on 25.4 (J.I. Dies)
Black Guillemot* Cepphus grylle. 3rd for SPAIN. A bird was seen from Punta das Olas, Caion, Laracha, A Coruña, Galicia on 9.4 (Antonio Sandoval).
Richard's Pipit* Anthus richardi. Still one bird moulting 1st winter to 1st summer at Vixán, Corrubedo, A Coruña, on 7.4 (Xurxo Piñeiro).Another was at Itsmo de la Lanzada. O Grove, Pontevedra on 14.4 (X.Piñeiro).
Red-throated Pipit Anthus cervinus. An adult was seen at El Prat de Llobregat flooded fields, Llobregat delta, on 14.4 (Pau Esteban) There was one at Albufera de València on 20.4 (Bosco Díes).There was another at Aiguamolls de l'Empordà NP on 16.4 (J.Martí) and +7 (TWO were ringed!) on 22-23.4 at Roncaires pond, Aiguamolls (O.Clarabuch, A.Alonso).Further birds were one at Mas trencat on 22.4 (L.Salaverri) and another FIVE at Tec lagoon on 23.4 (L.Salaverri, J.Martí), all at PN Aiguamolls, Girona. At Estany Pudent, Formentera, Balearic Islands, there was one bird, the 1st for the island, on 20.4 (Santi Costa, Philipp Garcia Heinen).Two were at El Cortalet, pN Aiguamolls, on 25.4 (Bas van de Meulengraaf, Raoul Beunen, Reinoud Vermoolen). One at el Matà area, PN Aiguamolls on 26.4 (T.Montràs, L.Salaverri); 5 birds at estany Europa, PN Aiguamolls on 27.4 (L.Salaverri, J.Martí) and 3 at camí de València flooded fields, Llobregat delta, on 26.4 (X.Larruy) and 27.4 (J.Jofre, J.Becarés). Again at Aiguamolls, there were four near el Matà on 28.4 and another ata Vilaut on 29.4 (Karmelo de Dios).At el Garxal, PN Delta de l'Ebre, there were 2 on 27.4 (Bas van de Meulengraaf, Raoul Beunen, Reinoud Vermoolen)
Black-headed Yellow Wagtail* Motacilla flava feldegg. A bird was found at Estany de les Molleroses, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona, on 9.4 (S.Sales, J.Martí). Another was at Besós river near Montcada i Reixac, Barcelona, on 13.4 (X.Larruy, Ramon Sanz).A male was seen at El Matà PN Aiguamolls, on 13.4 and another male at Vilaüt, also Aiguamolls on 14.4 (E &S Durand, A.Flitti). A male was at Mas Avinyó fields, PN Aiguamolls, on 27.4 (A.ALcocer, G.Llorens). Still there on 29-30.4 (LJ Salaverri, T Montràs, M Jiménez).
Citrine Wagtail* Motacilla citreola. A probable 1st summer bird was found on 10.4 at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (Tim Drew; Guy Flohart). It was relocated on 11.4 (S.Sales, T.Montràs, J.Martí) and also the 12.4 (Guy Flohart). See thumbnails of photos taken on 11.4. A male was at El Matà (also PN Aiguamolls) on 14.4 (J.L. Copete, Montse Rollán). It is not still clear if it was the same bird seen in previous days.
Siberian Chiffchaff* Phylloscopus collybita tristis. One bird was ringed on 19.4 and retrapped both on 22 and 23.4 at Canal Vell Biological Station, Ebre Delta, Tarragona (S.Sales, D.Bigas).
Icterine Warbler. Hippolais icterina. A bird was claimed from estany de Vilaüt, PN Aiguamolls, on 26.4 (Bas van de Meulengraaf, Raoul Beunen, Reinoud Vermoolen)
Olivaceous Warbler. Hippolais pallida. Extralimital record: a bird was seen at Villafáfila, Zamora, on 14.4 (M.A.García Matellanes, Alfonso Rodrigo)
Balearic Woodchat Shrike Lanius senator badius. Mainland record.One bird was trapped and ringed on 22.4 at Canal Vell Biological Station, Ebre Delta, Tarragona (S.Sales, D.Bigas). This is only the 5th record for Ebre delta.
