Great Northern Diver Gavia immer. INLAND RECORD. Late news: a bird was seen at Embalse de Barcena, León, on 28.12 (Pablo Fernández)

Slavonian Grebe* Podiceps auritus. At Santoña, perhaps the best place for the species in Spain, there were nine birds on 15.12 (Mª Teresa Garrigós, Juan Manuel Pérez de Ana). The widlfowl count of Santoña marshes, Cantabria, on 19.12 gave a total of 11 birds (Juan G Navedo, Álvaro Bustamante). There was a bird at ria de Eo mouth, Lugo-Asturies, on 20.12 (David Calleja). On 8.12 there was a bird at Ortigueira, A Coruña (Antonio & Pablo Gutiérrez). There was one at ria de Ferrol on 19-20.12 (Antonio & Pablo Gutiérrez). See a thumbnail here.

Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus. CRITICALLY ENDANGERED . Any record will be included in an attempt to quantify overwintering population and movements. A count carried out in Catalonia in 29.11 gave 320 birds: 310 at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà (J.Martí), 2 off Llobregat Delta (A.Ramal, V.Lomeña) and 8 off Torredembarra-Punta de la Mora, Tarragona (E.Guinart, R.Gutiérrez). At Euskadi, off Santurtzi, there were 17 between 23-26.11 (Gorka Ocio). At Cantabria, some were presumably reported in the morning of 30.11 off playa de Berria, Santoña ( to A.Rodrigo), but not a single one was seen in the afternoon (A.Rodrigo).On 30.11 there were 46 off Cap de Creus, Girona (Ponç Feliu). On 1.12 there were 400 between Les Cases d'Alcanar and the Ebre delta, Tarragona (David Bigas). On 1.12 there was a flock of 600 birds fishing near the coast (< 1 n.m.) off  Llobregat Delta, Barcelona (F.López). At Benicàssim, Castelló, there were 495 on 1.12 (Miguel Tirado). Off Matalascañas, Huelva, there were 64 flying E on 1.12 (Iñigo Fajardo). On 29.11 there were four (two to the NW and two following a fishing vessel) 1,5 miles off W Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Salva Garcia). There were several flocks flying N and S on 30.11 and 1.12 at Tabernes de Valldigna- Cullera beaches, Valencia. Number from 30.11 could be 85 minimum given some birds moved N and S (Luis Aleixos Alapont). As expected from bibliography, bulk of the population has not reached yet the Balearic Islands: from a number of sites on the coast of Mallorca on 24.11, there were the following results: Cape Formentor (0), Muleta (0), Cal de Cala Figuera (1), Cap Blanc (1), Cap de Ses Salines (0), Cap de Capdepera (1) and Cap Enderrocat (0) all sites having been covered 1 or 2 hours long (Maties Rebassa; Carlos López Jurado). On 30.11, at Cabo Matxitxako, Bizkaia, Euskadi there were 90 birds counted in a period of 3 hours (Ignacio García Plazaola, Javi Franco, Enrique Franco). On 30.11, there were 3 off punta de A Frouxeira, Valdoviño, A Coruña (Ignacio Torres). On 1.12 there were 4 off Malpica de Bergantiños, A Coruña, Galicia (Antonio Sandoval; Ignacio Torres). On 3.12 there were c.100 off Llobregat delta, Barcelona (birds were dispersed, not included in below count) (F.López, R.Gutiérrez).VERY INTERESTING NEWS: On 4.12, the new count of PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà area raised to 1472 birds (!) divided into two major groups of 870 and 375 plus other lesser flocks. None of 475 birds closely seen was oiled (Jordi Martí Aledo).About 500 birds off Llobregat delta agian in 4.12 (Ferran González; F.López). A bird appeared oiled and dead in Euskadi on 7.12 (Gorka Ocio). No  birds at Benicàssim on 6-8.12 (Miguel Tirado Bernat) and only a few (tens) off Llobregat delta on 9.12 (Ferran López). On 9.12, 26 off Cap de Creus, Girona (Ponç Feliu). On 8.12 12 were counted in an hour off Faro de Ses Salines, Mallorca, Illes Balears (Lalo Ventoso).Later in the month, c.20.12 the birds of Llobregat delta have moved presumably north, there is still a group near Tarragona of c.50 birds (R.Gutiérrez, E.Guinart) on 17.12 and 36 at Torredembarra, Tarragona on 13.12 (Marc Peris). There was some movement off delta de la Tordera, Blanes, Girona on 15.12 with some hundreds that well may be the Llobregat ones and the birds from Aiguamolls have left the area given bad weather (Alfons DG). But overall count could be stated as correct. 4580 birds off playa del Pinar, Castelló (Miguel Tirado Bernat); 120 birds off PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà (A.Comes, H.Perxacs), 10 off Llobregat delta (F.López) and 70 off Ebre delta, Tarragona all in 27.12 except Aiguamolls sighting (26.12).More data from late december to complete wintering counts: 31 birds seen in different flocks off Tavernes de Valldigna, València, on 28.12 (Luis Aleixos Alapont). At PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona, a complete count on 30.12 produced 330 birds (Jordi Martí Aledo, M.Jiménez). At Galicia, at Silleiro cape, Pontevedra, 3 were seen flying south after a two-hous seawatch under severe S winds on 29.12 (César Vidal). And again at the Mediterranean, there were 23 off Torremolinos, Málaga, on 29.12 (Andy Paterson)

This bird is different from the two earlier ones totalling three birds (Fernando García Roncero, Alfonso Rodrigo). There were 9 birds (!) at laguna de la Nava, Palencia, on 25.12 (Miguel Rouco). One of the Villafáfila birds seen on 23.12 near Laguna de Barillo (Javier Marchamalo, Miguel Juan, Delfín González). It is interesting to remember that the same area had an adult pure and an hybrid last march (see here for the march photos).According to J.Martí Aledo, from the Aiguamolls NP, there could be indeed 2 drakes by 31.12 plus the hybrid. Detailed descriptions of one of the males have been taken to compare with 'the other' individual which favours another location within the area.

The four females at Traba lagoon, Laxe, A Coruña, were still there on 30.11-1.12 (J L Rabuñal Patiño).On 21-22.12 the number of Ring-necked Ducks at Traba had reached seven birds: an immature male that arrived by mid month, the five females, four of which were already there since november and a sixth female first located on 21.12 (José Luis Rabuñal). There was a male at Valdoviño, A Coruña on 4.12,  see thumbnail here. Lesser-Yellowlegs* Tringa flavipes. The bird reported previously at Ensenada da Insua, Ponteceso-Cabana, A Coruña, that had been affected by the oil spill and was dirty, remained in the area, apparently in a rather good condition but still dirty, on 30.11-1.12 (J L Rabuñal Patiño)A first winter appeared at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, at Matà area, on 4.12 (J.Martí Aledo). It is the 4th for the Park and 5th for Girona province. The Ínsua bird was still there on 21-22.12 (JL Rabuñal).

South Polar Skua* Catharacta maccormicki. The bird that is kept in the A Coruña university dead by the Prestige fuel is not a South Polar Skua. It is a pale underparts immature female skua, but advanced moult in primaries and presence of chestnut mantle feathers rule out this species. Measurements are within the lower range given for Catharacta skua (R.Gutiérrez). Normal alternative is Great Skua C.skua, and it's almost the certain option for this corpse, but until full examination and description is carried out, it is better still considered as unidentified skua given the recent occurrences of austral skuas in N hemisphere waters and the odd looking of underparts (RG).

Franklin's Gull* Larus pipixcan. A 2nd winter was seen at Laredo, Cantabria on 21.12 associated to a flock of 55 Mediterranean Gulls L.melanocephalus (Álvaro Bustamante; Juanjo Aja, Fernando Arce). Seen again on 24.12 but not on 25.12  (F.Arce).

Ring-billed Gull* Larus delawarensis. From 25.11 till 4.12 at least there was an adult at playa de Ares, A Coruña, Galicia (Pablo y Antonio Gutiérrez). There was an adult at  Playa de Serantes, Tapia de Casariego, Asturies on 7.12 (Pablo Fernández García y Gilberto S.Jardón).On 14.12 there was an adult at playa de Ares, A Coruña. It seems to be a regular overwinterer in the area (David Bigas, Javier de la Puente, Ricard Gutiérrez).See a thumbnail here

Great Black-backed Gull  Larus marinus. Fifth for Catalonia since 1985: an adult was seen flying at close distance at PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà coast on 26.12 (Aleix Comes, Helena Perxacs).

Guillemot Uria aalge aalge . EXTRALIMITAL RECORD. Fourth record for the Valencia community since 1985, Mediterranean basin. A female was found dead at Benidorm beach, Alicante on 19.12, where it had been seen days before alive (Antonio Jacobo Ramos). The bird had eaten a hook, definitely causing its death. See thumbnails here. The population overwintering off N and NW Spain has been severely affected by Prestige tanker wreck and the subsequent dispersal of those birds has been pointed out as a possible explanation of this vagrancy (Elias Gomis). Further information in Spanish here (opens in another window)

Little Auk Alle alle. At Cabo Higer, Hondarribia, Gipuzkoa, Euskadi, one bird was seen flying to the W in the middle of a noteworthy passage of Gannets, Auks, Skuas and Mediterranean gulls (Gorka Gorospe).Number of dead corpses and oiled birds in Galicia and N Spain. A summary not available for the moment but over ten birds involved. Two still at Cariño harbour, Galicia on 8.12 (Pablo Gutiérrez et al).

Pied Wagtail Motacilla alba yarrellii. Only extralimital records. The male found at Ebre delta, Tarragona on 5.11 was still there on 2.12 (Sergi Sales)

RED-RUMPED WHEATEAR*  Oenanthe moesta. FIRST FOR SPAIN AND EUROPE. A male was seen at Cabo de Gata, Almería, on 21.12 in what is a suitable place for potential vagrants from N Africa (Javier Falcó, Aki Ragnarsson).
