Fulmar Fulmarus glacialis. A bird was seen flying W from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia, on 5.9 (Antonio Sandoval).
Little Shearwater* Puffinus assimilis Two records (1)On the Pride of Bilbao ferry from Santurtzi to Portsmouth, a bird was seen at c.120 miles from Bilbao on 8.9 under severe gale conditions, a fact that caused that only two lucky observers (e.g. from 58 Spanish birders) could see this bird (Gorka Ocio, Alfonso Rodrigo). Later on the trip, another was seen near Brest, in French waters (Ferran López)(2) On 5.9 one was seen flying W from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia (Antonio Sandoval).
MASKED BOOBY* Sula dactylatra THIRD FOR SPAIN AND THE WP. One record (1) A sub-dult Masked Booby was seen from the Portsmouth-Bilbao ferry on 3.9 and 4.9.  Apparently the bird followed the boat from around 5.15pm on 3.9 (off France) and stayed with it all night only leaving the boat as it arrived in Bilbao harbour at 06.30am this morning.  This is a phenomenal record and presumably will be backed up with some good photos as the bird stayed with the boat for such a long time (Clive Martin, Hugh Harrop). BROWN BOOBY* Sula leucogaster Fourth FOR SPAIN . One record (1 by snail mail) A bird was seen from Estaca de Bares, Mañón, A Coruña, Galivia on 10.9 at 500 m from the coast flying W (Antonio Sandoval). Last year another Brown booby was found dead amongst casualties of the Prestige tanker. There is a photo of that 2002 bird here.

Bittern Botaurus stellaris. Extralimital record. A bird was seen on 20.9 at rio Vélez, Málaga (Samuel Peregrina). There have been only 5 records in Málaga in the last 10 years (S.Peregrina com.pers.).

Great White Egret Egretta alba. . There were 2 at Entremuros, Sevilla, on 2.9 (John Butler). One was at S'Albufera de Mallorca on 1.9 (Pere Vicens).There was one at Salinas de Bonanza, Cádiz on 6.9 (JM Reyes et al).There was still a bird at S'Albufera, Mallorca on 8.9 (Pere Vicens).There was a bird at Bedua, ria de Uriola, Gipuzkoa on 14.9 (Aitor Leiza).There were 2 at S'Albufera de Mallorca, Balearic Islands on 19.9 (Maties Rebassa). On 20.9 there was one at Los Canchales reservoir, Mérida, Extremadura (Juan Antonio García Jiménez).On 21.9 there were 2 at Entremuros del Guadiamar, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana)On 28.9 two were seen at Filpines marsh, Llobregat delta, Barcelona (F.López, R.Gutiérrez et al). The 14.9 a bird was seen flying over Hondarribia airport, then flying over Plaiaundi to Bidasoa Islands, Gipuzkoa (David Calleja Marcos, Mikel Guerelu Clemente).There was one on 19.9 at S'Albufera de Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Stephan Cramer and Eks Feuth). From 16-29 there was a bird at Pals ricefields, Girona (Carles Barriocanal & JCW)

Presumed hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret* Egretta gularis x garzetta (1)There was a hybrid at Entremuros, Sevilla, on 2.9 (John Butler)

Marabou* Leptoptilos crumeniferus (1)  Two were seen at Santa Pola saltpans, Alicante on 9.9 (Ignacio Gámez). These birds have been present in the area since late august and remained in early october (see october page)

Yellow-billed stork* Mycteria ibis(1)  One was seen at Santa Pola saltpans, Alicante on 9.9 (Ignacio Gámez)

Saddle-billed Stork Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis. Unknown origin but probable escape (but from where?). First ever record for Spain in the wild. An adult of this species was first seen by 22.9 at Sanlucar la Mayor, Sevilla (Celia Hernández). Photographed on 30.9 (José Manuel Reyes). See a photo below and a thumbnail here

Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus. There were 84 at Marmoleja, Isla Menor, Sevilla on 3.9 (John Butler).There were c.1000 birds (!) at Isla Menor, Sevilla between 19-22.9 ( least 500 in the same place on 24.9 (Daniel L Huertas, Rafael Romero). There were 2 at La Janda, Cádiz on 19.9 (Paul Willoughby)On 28.9 one was seen at Llobregat delta, Barcelona (F.López, R.Gutiérrez et al).On 24.9 there were 700 at Olivillos, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana) and 900 at isla Mayor, Sevilla on 27.9 (Daniel L Huertas)

Sacred Ibis* Threskiornis aethiopicus. Four records. (1, 2, 3,4 ). (1) The bird found on 10.8 at marisma de la Ramallosa, Nigrán, Pontevedra was still there on 1.9 (Luis Enrique Senra) and on 20.9 continued in the same area (Adrián Lanosa, Xosé Pardavila, Gonzalo R.Mucientes) as well as in 22.9 (César Vidal). African Spoonbill* Platalea alba(1)  On 23.9 a bird was seen at Brazo del Este, Sevilla (Manuel Aguayo). Another one, certainly the same, was reported on 18.8.2003 from Centro de InformaciónJA.Valverde (CerradoGarrido). Snow Goose* Anser caerulescens . One record (1) In the middle of the arrival of many Pectoral Sandpipers, the Brown Booby at Galicia and other nearctic birds to Europe, a wild-behaving bird was seen at Salada Grande de Alcañiz, Teruel on 15.9 (Fco.Javier Moreno). Unknown origin but behaving wild.

Ring-necked Duck* Aythya collaris (1)  One was seen at Catalina Garcia, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands on 7.9 (Gerd Rotzoll)
Rüppell's Vulture* Gyps rueppellii (1, 2)  The bird seen in May around the Straits of Gibraltar and brought to the Jerez Zoo and released with a radiotransmitter into the wild on 10.7 and lost by 30.7 was seen again on 3.9 (Paco Montoya/COCN). There seem to be 2 Ruppells now inthe straits area (José Luis Copete).(2) A 2nd immature bird was seen at Algarrobo watching point, Tarifa, Cádiz, on 13.9 (Rafael Romero, David González Ortega, Paco Chiclana). This bird seems to have been the days before preying on a dead bull nearby with Griffon Vultures, e.g. on 12.9 (Federico Roviralta). 
Long-legged Buzzard/ Steppe Buzzard* Buteo rufinus/ B.buteo vulpinus (1/1snail mail, 2snail mail)  One rufinus was reported from La Janda area, Cádiz, near a canal closed to the road to Zahara de los Atunes on 21.9 (Jorge Garzón).However, there is a substantiated claim from La Janda on 19.9 of a Steppe Buzzard (B.buteo vulpinus) (Paul Willoughby) which makes us think that both birds can be the same .On 6.9 a bird was seen in the same are and it has been submitted by snail mail to the CR/SEO as Steppe Buzzard (Andy Paterson) thus certainly being possibly the same 19.9 and why not the 21.9 bird too being all the same vulpinus (2) A rufinus was seenfrom Trafico observatory at Tarifa, Cádiz on 23.9 (J.Ramirez, M.Lobón, F.Romero, la Cruz et al).Also on 24-25.9 (Alfonso López López). Red-Footed Falcon Falco vespertinus. There were two on migration at Guardia Pilosa, near Sant Marti Sesgueioles, 5 km S of Calaf, Barcelona on 23.9 (Alex Ollé).There was one at Lindus, Navarra on 20-21.9 (Sergio de Juan).There was one male at L'Albufera de València, València on 24.9(Stephan Cramer and Els Feuth).On 23.9 there were 2 at Sant Guim de Freixenet, Lleida possibly being the same two reported S of Calaf the same day (Xavier Larruy).

Eleonora's Falcon Falco eleonorae. Only mainland Spain records to be published. On 20.9 there was a dark phase bird at Montcada peak, Barcelona (X.Macià, X.Larruy). On 29.9 there was a pale phase hunting at Sant Guim de Freixenet, Lleida (Xavier Larruy).

Crested Coot Fulica cristata. Late news: One of the birds released in the Llobregat delta in april was seen on 3.8 at Turia river mouth, Valencia, after the severe drought affecting Catalonia (Pedro A. del Baño Moreno)At Medina lagoon, Cádiz, there were 7 birds on 15.9 amongst thousands of Common Coots (Paco Chiclana).At the same place, there were 5 on 21.9 (Jorge Garzón).

Dotterel Charadrius morinellus. On 1.9 there were 14 birds at Alfés, Lleida (Enric Farré). On 1.9 there were 8 at Puigmal peak, Girona (Emmanuel Roy). Near Albacete there were the following groups: 14 on 1.9 at Cueva del Yegüero, Casas de Juan Núñez (M.López, B.Campos), 8 at El Hoyo, Pétrola on 2.9 (C.Cifuentes, D.Cañizares); 5 near Vertedero de Albacete on 2.9 (C.Cifuentes, D.Cañizares).There were 2 juveniles at Los Lances beach, Cádiz on 20.9 (M.Villaécija, L.Morales, C.Segovia, E.Alés & P.Chichala). There were 3 juveniles near casa del Alcaide, Albacete on 14.9 (Cristina Cifuentes, David Cañizares).On 20-9 there were 7 near Rambla Morales, Almería and on 22.9 there were 25 (!) c.30 meters from the 20.9 location (Raimundo Martín).There were 9 at the same place on 24.9 (Gabriel Martín García).

American Golden Plover* Pluvialis dominica (1)  One was seen and photographed on 20.9 at Zeluán, Gozón, Asturies (Jorge Valella, César Álvarez Laó, Daniel López Velasco et al). Photos available soon. On 27.9 it was still there (Juan Carlos Vázquez Rodriguez)

Temminck's Stint Calidris temminckii. There were 2 at Dehesa de Abajo, Puebla del Rio,Sevilla, on 3.9 (John Butler). On 2.9 and until 4.9 there were 8 at S'Albufera de Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Lalo Ventoso).There were 2 at Cerro de las Cigüeñas, Aznalcázar, Sevilla, and four more at Brazo del Este, Sevilla the same day (Paco Chiclana).There was one at Tablas de Daimiel National Park, Ciudad Real on 1.9 (Juan Ruiz).There was one at Brazo del Este, Sevilla on 24.9 (Daniel L Huertas, Rafael Romero).On 27.8 there were 3 at Isla Mayor ricefields, Sevilla (Paco Chiclana).

White-rumped Sandpiper* Calidris fuscicollis (1 ). One bird in almost winter plumage was seen at Catalina Garcia, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands on 7-19.9 (Gerd Rotzoll)

Pectoral Sandpiper* Calidris melanotos. 13 records/ 14 birds (1 through snail mail, 2 , 3, 4, 5,6,7,8, 9 by snail mail, 10, 11&12, 13snail mail).(1) Photos of the 30.8 birds at Traba lagoon, Laxe, A Coruña here (José Luis Rabuñal, David Bigas, P.Gutiérrez, P.Pita, A.Sandoval, R.Moreno-Opo).(2) On 12.9 morning it was seen a juvenile/1st winter for a few minutes at Maresma de les Filipines, RN Delta del Llobregat , Viladecans, Barcelona (Ferran López).Seen again on 13.9 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Armand Ramal) and 14.9 (Rafael Armada)to 19.9 (F.López, X.Larruy) Still seen on 25.9 (R.Gutiérrez) See a thumbnail here and last seen on 27.9 (F.López) (3) On 7.9. a bird was found at ría de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies (Xuan Cortés) where it was still on 11.9 (Clemente Álvarez) and 12.9 when a SECOND bird appeared (nº 5 in this list). (7) One juvenile was seen at Catalina Garcia, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands on 7-19.9 (Gerd Rotzoll)(8) On 20.9 two juveniles were seen at Salobrar de Campos, Mallorca at a pond near camí de sa Barrala, Balearic Islands (Miquel Angel Reus, Pere Dietrich)(9) Around 6.9 Eduardo Alba saw and photographed a bird at Guadalhorce river mouth, Málaga (pers.comm. by Antonio Tamayo) (10)A bird was reported from Cerro de las Cigüeñas, Los Palacios, Sevilla, on 21.9 (Alfonso Barragán) (11 & 12) On 25.9 two new juveniles were found altogethe, and c.100 m from individual (2) at maresma de les Filpines, Llobregat delta, Barcelona. Broad-billed Sandpiper* Limicola falcinellus(1 ). (1) A third bird from Ebro Delta, Tarragona :on 2.9 there was a juvenile bird at Fangar bay (Julia Piccardo, David Bigas, Sergi Sales)

Buff-breasted Sandpiper* Tryngites subruficollis (1 ). (1) A bird was seen at Ebre Delta, Tarragona on 29.9 (Marina Barquin, Enric, Steve West, Xavier Revés)-

Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis. There was one bird at S'Albufera de Mallorca, Balearic Islands,  on 19.9 (Matgies Rebassa).There were 2 on 18-21.9 at S'Albufera de Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Stephan Cramer and Eks Feuth)

Terek Sandpiper* Xenus cinereus (1,2 ). (1) On 12.9 a party of 8 Dutch birders saw a bird at marina de Sancti Petri, Cádiz between 11:30 and 12:30 (Marco Witte et al) (2) One juvenile was found at El Fangar bay, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 22.9 (David Bigas)

Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus. There were 2 at Salinas de Bonanza, Cádiz on 6.9 (JM Reyes et al).There was one at Punta de la Banya, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 11.9 (David Bigas).There was one at Plaiaundi, Txingudi, Irun, Gipuzkoa, from 9-10.9 (D.Calleja, M.Guereñu, M.Pérez). Long-tailed Skua* Stercorarius longicaudus(1,2 ). On 6.9 one was seen flying E from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, Galicia (Antonio Sandoval, Pablo Gutiérrez, Pablo Pita, Antonio Gutiérrez, Ignacio Allegue). There was one at Estaca de Bares, A Coruña on 10.9 (Antonio Sandoval).

Sabine's Gull Larus sabini. On 5.9 there were over 100 birds in front of the Cies islands, Pontevedra, Galicia, about 5 miles off Cabo Silleiro (Tito Salvadores Ramos).On 27.9 c.45 birds were seen in a seawatch off Asturies (Daniel Lopez Velasco et al).

Caspian Tern Sterna caspia. On 2.9 there were 5 at Santander bay (2 juvs and 3 adults) (Javier de la Cruz). On 2.9 there were 2 at Bedua, Zumaia, Gipuzkoa (Oliver Perez, Aitor Leiza, Javier Castro).Late record was that of 3 birds at desembocadura del Guadalhorce, Málaga on 29.8 (Adriano Vázquez, S.Peregrina, A.Tamayo).There were 2 at Urdaibai NR, Bizkaia on 7.9 (Sergio de Juan, B.Valcarel, K.Zaballa. M.Martín, Miren)On 12.9 there was a bird at S'Albufera de Mallorca, Illes Balears (Maties Rebassa, Pere Vicens). There were 2 birds at Santoña, Cantabria on 1.9, one of the birds having a ring in its left tarsus (Alejandro García).There were 2 on 2.9 (D.Calleja Marcos, M.Guereñu) and 5 on 9.9 at Txingudi, Guipuzcoa, over Plaiaundi park (Mikel Guereñu; Pedro Arratibel). One bird was seen following a fishing boat 1 nautical mile off Castro Urdiales, Cantabria (Gorka Ocio).There were 29 birds at Sant Antoni saltpans, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona, on 6.9 (Marc Peris). There was one on 17.9 at S'Albufera de Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Stephan Cramer and Eks Feuth). On 27.9 there were 21 altogether at Salines de Sant Antoni, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (Xavier Larruy).

Lesser-Crested Tern Sterna bengalensis. On 21.9 a bird was seen flying E from Gibraltar (Ernest FJ Garcia, 21.9 a bird was seen off playa de los Lances, Cádiz (Jorge Garzón).

Little Tern Sterna albifrons. Extralimital record. 3rd record for Navarra: two birds were seen at Balsa de Zolina, Aranguren, Navarra, on 9.9 (Gorka Gorospe).

White-winged Black Tern Chlidonias leucopterus. One adult was at the same place that the River Warbler at Pontevedra on 4.9 (César Vidal). See a thumbnail here.From 20.8 to 9.9 there was a juvenile at la Rogera lagoon, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (Jordi Martí Aledo i Teresa Montràs)There were 2 juveniles at PN S'Albufera de Mallorca, Balearic Islands on 15.9 (Lalo Ventoso). Citrine Wagtail* Motacilla citreola(1 ) (1) A 1st winter bird was found at maresma de les Filipines, Llobregat delta while videotapping a Pectoral Sandpiper (!!) and the bird crossed the video-monitor. Later it was seen and videoed as well. See two thumbnails here and two videols in this page. The bird was still in the same very area until the end of the month and 1.10 (R.Gutiérrez et al).

River Warbler* Locustella fluviatilis(1 throuth snail mail ) Putative first for Spain. (1) A bird was seen at close range (5m) at 12:00 and until 18:30 in a reedbed of Miño estuary,A Guarda, Pontevedra on 4.9(César Vidal).

Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola. There was one at Ría de Villaviciosa, Asturies on 3.9 (Clemente Álvarez Usátegui) At Ensenada de Esteiro, Mañón, A Coruña, ther was a bird on 6.9 (Antonio Sandoval, Ana Torres Jack).One was at Málaga, at río Vélez on 6.9 (Samuel Peregrina).

Icterine warbler Hippolais icterina. On 4.9 there was a bird at Ferrol, A Coruña (Pablo Gutiérrez). Late august records are those of birds on 28.8 at estany d'Europa, PN Aiguamolls, Girona (Lluís Gustamante) and 29.8 (two at Ter Vell, L'Estartit, Girona) (Lluís Gustamante). On 6.9 an EURING 3- was ringed at Canal Vell biological station, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (S.Sales, N.Rodriguez).

Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca. There were at least two birds on 6.9 at Peñausende, Zamora (Juan José Ramos Encalado).On 22.9 there was one of the ssp minula at Dehesa de Abajo, Puebla del Rio, Sevilla (John Butler, John Harrison, Robert Sheldon).Interestingly, on 21.9 one had been ringed at Gibraltar being the 3rd record for the area (Ernest FJ Garcia 25.9 one was ringed at Llobregat Delta Nature Reserves, at Filpines marsh (J.Castelló, F.López et al). Greenish Warbler* Phylloscopus trochiloides. Three records. (1 through snail mail, 2&3 through snail mail). On 24.9 a bird was seen at Peroño, La Vaca, Gozón, Asturies (Elias García Sánchez). (2&3)On 26.9 there were two birds heard and seen at the same area, believed to be different from the 24.9 bird as they were more greenish (Elias García, Pedro J Menéndez, Daniel López Velasco)

Red-breasted Flycatcher* Ficedula parva. Three records. (1 through snail mail, 2 , 3) Late record. On 28.8 there was one seen at close range at Barajas district of Madrid (Alejandro González Alonso)(2) One 1st winter was ringed on 26.9 at Filipines marsh, Llobregat delta. Lesser Shrike Lanius minor. Extralimital record One was reported from Cabo de Gata saltpans, Almería on 24.9 (Gabriel Martín García).

Snow Finch Montifringilla nivalis Large group. A flock of 140 birds was seen at 2400 m high near Torre de la Horcada, Picos de Europa, Asturies on 3.9 (Clemente Álvarez Usátegui).
