Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus. On 10-18.1 a total of 968 were counted off Castelló province coasts, quite a large number (Ecologistes en Acció, RN Illes Columbrets).

  • Catalonia
Few birds. A total would give 146 birds on 17-19.2
On 17.2 there were 140 birds off Cap de Creus, Girona (Ponç Feliu). Simultaneous counts at 12:00 on 19.2 off delta de la Tordera, Girona; Llobregat delta, Barcelona and Tarragona beach gave only 6 birds off Tordera (F.López; R.Gutiérrez; F.X.Santaeufemia,X.Sampere). This lack of birds coindides with scarce captures of the sardine fishing fleet (ed.comment)
  • València
On 17.2 one of the two largest concentrations in the last years was noted off Albufera de València, València: off Saler beach, c.100 m offshore, there were a minimum of 3250 birds between 15-16 hours counted while moving north. The count was stopped when some of the birds returned southwards about 16:00 but the flock had been there all the morning (Bosco Dies, Nacho Dies). Interestingly, the SAME DAY, at Torrevieja, Alicante over 5000 birds were counted (A.Jacobo Ramos, S.Arroyo at Naturalicante website). These birds were seen from 13:00 onwards during all the evening. Probably the same Torrevieja flock was seen on 18.2 morning off Illa de Benidorm, Alacant, a bit to the N, where 1965 were noted in a moment in which a lot have passed before without being counted (José Santamaría, Fernando Carmona). However, off Valencia, there were only c.20 on 19.2 (Nacho Díes).

So if the figures are accurated,  there could be at least c.8390 alive Balearic Shearwaters since the 3250 and 5000 count seem to be simultaneous.

Mediterranean Shearwater Puffinus yelkouan. Well documented Atlantic sighting. On 1.2 from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, a bird was seen flying side by side of a Balearic Shearwater P.mauretanicus (Antonio Sandoval). The structural features were correctly noted, white colour distribution and jizz compared to the also present those days Manx Shearwaters There were 35-40 off Cap de Creus, Girona on 17.2 (Ponç Feliu)

Martí-Aledo).There was one at Villafáfila, Zamora on 7.2 (Beatriz Iglesias, LM Alonso, Clemente Álvarez). There was one neat Térmens, Lleida on 22.2 (Joan Estrada). On 20.2 there was one at Basses d'en Coll, Pals, Girona (Carles Barriocanal).
