Blue-winged Teal Anas discors (1)

(1) Valencia. An eclipse drake was well seen at Marjal de Almenara, Quartell, Valencia, on 2.8 (Toni Alcocer)


Pied-billed Grebe Podylimbus podiceps (1)
(1) Lugo The bird seen at Riocaldo lagoons, Begonte, Lugo on 23.8.2007 then again in 2008 until the spring has reappeared in the same lagoon: On 9.8 it was found (José Otero) and on 16.8 it was seen again (José Otero, Eva Villares, Toño Salazar; Antonio Ceballos, Juan Sagardia). It is still in breeding plumage and it is quite elusive.

Freira-like Petrel: Desertas-Madeiran Petrel Pterodroma feae / 'deserta' / madeira (1,2)
(1) A Coruña. One was seen at close range from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, on 2.8 (Ricardo Hevia):

'1 ejemplar llegando del E y que al  llegar en frente al cabo se mezcla entre una balsa de Larus michahellis,Larus fuscus,Puffinus mauretanicus y Calonectris diomedea y permanece durante varios minutos volando de un lado a otro para más tarde perderse'.

(2) A Coruña. Another was seen from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, on 19.8 (Gonzalo Lage, José Miguel Devesa y Ricardo Hevia Barcón)

Little (Barolo's) Shearwater Puffins (assimilis) baroli (1-5,6-7)
(1-5) Bizkaia. Five were seen on board of Pride of Bilbao ferry c. 80 nautic miles off Santurtzi, Bizkaia, on 16.8 (Gorka Ocio and others).
(6-7) Bizkaia. Two were seen on board of Pride of Bilbao ferry c. 90 and 93 nautic miles off Santurtzi, Bizkaia, on 23.8 (Gorka Ocio and others).

Wilson's Storm Petrel Oceanites oceanicus (1-3)
(1-3) A Coruña. At least three different but perhaps up to 8 or 9 were seen from the organized seawatch off Cariño, A Coruña, on 17.8 (Antonio Ceballos, Alfonso Valderas, Antonio Gutiérrez, Pablo Pita, Clemente Álvarez, Daniel L. Velasco,Ricardo Hevia Barcón, Óscar Llama, Jesús Risueño, Pablo Giménez, Noelia Ayala, Antón Pérez, Javier Gómez Atoiz, David Martínez Lago, Guillermo Rodríguez, - Jose Miguel Alonso Pumar, Juan Sagardia). Presumed Hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta (1,2,3)
(1) Valencia. There was a juvenile bird showing intermediate characters between garzetta and gularis at Albufera fe Valencia on 5.8 (Pedro Marín, Toni Alcocer y B. Dies).Photo below (Toni Alcocer).

(3) Cáceres. A bird, perhaps the same seen in previous months, was seen at Charca de Los Gañanes, Guijo de Coria, Cáceres on 17.8 (Sergio Mayordomo), 21.8 (Ricardo Montero) and 24.8 (Sergio Mayordomo). Ricardo Montero had seen an individual at Coria, Cáceres on 4.4.2008.

Lesser Flamingo Phoenicopterus minor (1)
Alicante On 14.8 one was seen and photographed at long range at Salinas de Santa Pola, Alicante (Juan Carlos Lorenzo, Jacobo Ramos). Seen again on 16.8 (Fernando camuñas, Toni Zaragozí, David Bañuls, Joan Sala, Ángel sp. y Jacobo Ramos). See a thumbnail here.

Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus (1)
(1) Cádiz On 23.8 one was seen from Cazalla bird observatories, Tarifa, Cádiz. This was a bird seen within the regular counts of the Programa Migres and surely the same seen last month and intermitently since then (David Cuenca, Joan Ferrer /Fundación Migres).

Málaga One was reported from rivers Grande and Guadalhorce junction, Málaga, on 8.8 (Samuel Peregrina)

Lanner Falco biarmicus (1)
Cádiz One was seen from Cazalla bird observatories, Tarifa, Cádiz o 23.8. This was a bird seen within the regular counts of the Programa Migres (David Cuenca, Joan Ferrer /Fundación Migres).

Allen's Gallinule Porphyrio alleni (1)
(1) Girona. One juvenile/ 1w was found at El Matà area, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona on 12.8 afternoon (Jordi Martí-Aledo, Àlex Ollé). It was relocated the next morning when photographed (Ponç Feliu, Aleix Comas, Sergi Sales). See a photo below (P.Feliu). It was seen by 13.8 midday (R.Armada) and at 17:30 by c.30 birders (Albert Cama, Ferran López, J.L.Copete, R.Jutglà, Martí Rodríguez, Oriol Clarabuch, Pierre-André Crochet, Armand Ramal, Ricard Gutiérrez and others).See a photo below and thumbnail here (R.Gutiérrez) . . The bird seems more confident than in previous days and has not received any attack from resident Moorhens (J.Martí-Aledo Seen on 17.8 afternoon at the same place (Jordi Martí-Aledo, Àlex Ollé, Albert Roca; Jordi Sala, Cristina Prieto). Semipalmated Stint Calidris pusilla(1)
(1) A Coruña An adult "peep" was found at A Comboa (Ladeira), Corrubedo Natural Park, Ribeira on 16.8 (Juan Cabeza) and 17.8 (Samuel Paz; Juan Cabeza)to 18.8 (Samuel Paz). Identified as Semipalmated only the second day. Surely, the same bird observed on 24-25.07 at Baldaio and 26-29.07 at Valdoviño (136 km away), according to feather design, although some scapulars moulted (check the july page here) See photos below and thumbnails here.

Baird's Sandpiper Calidris bairdii (1)
Valencia A bird was found at Albufera de Valencia's arrosars de El Ràfol, Sueca, P.N. de l'Albufera Silla on 19.8 (Bosco Dies). See photos below and thumbnails here. White-rumped Sandpiper Calidris fuscicollis (1)
Huelva One adult individual was found within a large Calidris flock at El Rocio, Huelva on 5.8.2008 (Simon Murray). A description has already been submitted to the CR/SEO-BirdLife. See three thumbnails here.

Pectoral Sandpiper Calidris melanotos (1,2,3,4,5,6,7)

(2) Valencia. After one bird in july, another was seen and later taken in to care to Centro de Recuperación de "La Granja" on 5.8 at Albufera de Valencia (Pedro Marínet al). More information at Birding Albufera website here. See thumbnails here. The bird died
(3) Tarragona. Perhaps the same bird found on 26.7 at Riet Vell reserve, or another adult, was seen at one flooded field within the same reserve on 8.8 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Eva Lahoz). See thumbnails here.
(4) Tarragona. Another bird shared grounds with bird (3) at Riet Vell flooded fields on 13.8 (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé) and 15.8 (Cristian Jensen).See thumbnails here.
(5) Valencia. The third bird of the season at Valencia was seen on 18.8.2008 at Reserva Natural de La Ratlla, Silla, Parc natural de l'Albufera. See a photo below (Bosco Dies). (6) Navarra. An individual was found at Pitillas lagoon, Navarra, on 25.8 (Ricardo Rodríguez). See some images in his blog here.
(7) Asturies. Another was seen at Cabu Peñes, Gozón, Asturies on 30.8 (Elías García Sánchez)

Wilson's Phalarope Phalaropus tricolor (1,2)
Murcia The bird found on 23.7 at Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar, Murcia was relocated in the same area on 5.8 (Tomás García, José Antonio Barba y Ángel Sallent).

(2) Alicante It is not clear if another bird or perhaps the same bird seen at Murcia until 5.8 at last, was found at Laguna de la Mata, Alicante, on 22.8 ( Sergio Arroyo y Jacobo Ramos).See two thumbnails here.It was seen again on 24.8 (Xurxo Piñeiro)

Alicante A bird was found at Laguna de la Mata, Alicante, on 12.8 ( Juan Carlos Lorenzo) and 22.8 in company of a Wilson's Phalarope, see above ( Sergio Arroyo y Jacobo Ramos)

(10-15) Bizkaia. Six were seen on board of Pride of Bilbao ferry c. 100 nautic miles off Santurtzi, Bizkaia, on 16.8 (Gorka Ocio and others).
(16) Pontevedra One adult was seen on 27.8 5 miles W of Cies islands (Albert Burgas, Alberto Gil y César Vidal).
(17) A Coruña Another juvenile was seen from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña, on 25.8 (Albert Cama, Javier Ortas y Ricardo Hevia)

Orange-billed Tern Sterna sp (elegans-like or hybrid of some kind) (1,2,3,4,5)
(1) Almería. A bird extremely similar (probably the same, ed.comment) to one seen last year in Valencia and Tarragona (see here for details, bird 3) was seen during the first week of August and until 7.8 at least at Cabo de Gata saltpans, Almería (Delfín González) and 8.8 (Raimundo Martín). (2) Valencia. The yellow-pvc ringed bird which was ringed in october 2002 at Odiel marshes as an adult, then bred at Valencia in 2006 and apparently the same having bred at Ebro delta in 2004 & 2005 always paired to a Sandwich Tern, was seen at Valencia on 13-14.8.2008 (J. (4) Tarragona. One unringed bird was seen at Tancada saltpans, Ebro Delta, on 10.8 (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé). See a photo below (Josep Tantull).Sterna sp

(5) Barcelona. The hybrid sandvicensis x c.f. bengalensis seen last 23.5 at Ebro Delta and ringed with a metal ring on its left leg (see may news) was seen again at Llobregat delta on 12.8 (Ferran López). This same bird was seen at Racó de l'Olla, València on 16.8 (Bosco Dies).

Huelva One was seen from Odiel marshes pier, Huelva, on 3.8 (Alberto Savijn).
(2-3) Cádiz. Two unringed birds were seen and photographed at salina de la Tapa, Parque Natural Bahía de Cádiz, on 4.8 (Rafael García Costales). (4) Cádiz. A bird, different from the two unringed birds mentioned above was seen at Parque Natural Bahía de Cádiz, on 22.8 (Rafael García Costales). See a thumbnail here.

(5-6) Huelva. Two birds were seen on 19.8 at Parque Nacional de Doñana beach, Almonte, Huelva (José Luis Arroyo, Iván San Martín), near the Guadalquivir river mouth. They had been already seen on 10.8 (José Antonio Sencianes, Iván San Martín, Luis García, Rubén Rodríguez). See photos below (J.L.Arroyo). One of these (or another) was seen in the same beach, but c. 4-5 km from Matalascañas, on 21.8 (Xurxo Piñeiro, Mª José Valencia y Carlos Florencio).

Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii (1-3,4,5-6,7-8)
Cádiz. Three were seen at Salinas de la Tapa, Parque Natural de la Bahía de Cádiz, on 9.8 (Rafael García Costales). See a Youtube video here. Seen again on 11.8 (Rafael García Costales).
(4) Asturies On 16.8 at 19:00 hours an adult was seen off Punta de la Vaca, Gozón, Asturies (Manuel Quintana Becerra).
(5-6) Cádiz. On 21.8 there were two birds, one with code LB o LG / M, black-billed and another unringed, black with red-based bill (Rafael García Costales).
(7-8) Cádiz. On 25.8 there were two more birds at Salina de la Tapa, Cádiz (Rafael García Costales=. On 30.8 one of them was noted to be ringed (light green/lime in right tarsus) not seen previously (R.García Costales, Óscar Llama, Xurxo Piñeiro y Quique Marcelo).

Little Swift Apus affinis (1-12,13-14)
Cádiz. At Guadalquivir river mouth, there were twelve eight different birds on 2.8 (Rafael García Costales).
(13-14) Sevilla. On 22.8, there were two at Sierra Norte de Sevilla, Lora del Río (Manolo Villaécija, Juan Sagardía, Paco Chiclana)

From March 2005 this webpage only includes records of birds needing homologation by CR/SEO. For other local rarities contact local bird reports or records committees. See here those rarities only for the Canary Islands also dealt by CR/SEO. Changes in application to the rarity list from January 2006. New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex, Sterna bengalensis and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and are not be included from 2006.

Recent reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded to the Spanish RC if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind. Gibraltar news are included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with anew icon.
