Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus (1,2)

(1) Cantabria. A bird coming from late august was seen at Santander bay on 5.10 in company of 36 Mute Swans Cygnus olor (Alejandro García Herrera)
(2) A Coruña. A bird was seen on Villarrube, Valdoviño, A Coruña on 17.10 (Antonio Gutiérrez)

(1-2) Asturies On 4.10 there were two at Lluces, Colunga, Asturies (Xuan Cortés).They remained in the area from 5.10 (Xuanín Zaldívar), 6.10 (Clemente Álvarez Usategui) and 7.10 (Adolfo Villaverde) to 10.10 at least (Xuan Cortés). (1-2) Asturies On 5.10 there were two at La Linera, Ria del Eo, Asturies/Lugo (Pablo Fernández García). See photos of these birds here (opens in another window).

(1) Tarragona On 25.10, one was found at Buda Island, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona, within the Geese group (Cristian Jensen, Iben Hove Sørensen).

(1) Lugo The bird seen at Riocaldo lagoons, Begonte, Lugo on 23.8.2007 then again in 2008 until the spring and reappeared on 9.8
was relocated in the same area, now losing its summer plumage, on 9.10 (Toño Salazar)

(1) Huelva A bird entered within Spanish waters at Ayamonte, Huelva, coming from Portuguese territorial waters off Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Portugal, at Guadiana river mouth on 6.10 (Antonio Aguilera).

White Pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus (1)
(1)Lleida The bird at Aiguamolls last month that was last seen on 29.9 (Ornitho-Empordà) was on 10.10 at Vallcalent recovery center pond, Lleida (Carles Solà), 217 km from PN Aiguamolls direction SE. It left the area in company of White Storks the same day (Jaume Bonfil). On 14.10 (Jordi Arnau; Marc Gàlvez) and 15.10 it was seen at Montoliu de Lleida dump (Roger Guillem).The bird was still there on 21.10 (Vittorio Pedrocchi).See a photo below (V.Pedrocchi) and 23.10 (Cristian Jensen) but also seen during the day at Santa Teresita church, Lleida town, with storks ! Presumed Hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta and Pure Western Reef Egretta gularis (1,2,3,4,5,6)
(1) Tarragona The presumed hybrid bird from the Tancada saltpans was seen again on 10.10 (Edu Gracia Tinedo). It was sen again on 26.10 at the same area (Alfredo Sánchez Galán)
(2) València. On 4.10 a different presumed hybrid bird from that seen last september was recorded at Sueca ricefields of El Fangar (J.I.Dies, Bosco Dies).See a photo below (Bosco Dies).Seen again on 22.10 at marjales La Llonga, Sueca (Anna Valentín y J.Vte. Bataller)

(3) Barcelona Late news. We've recently known that the bird showing hybrid characters that had been lingering around Besós river, Llobregat delta, the zoo and Diagonal Mar park ended its journey at the last area on 1.9. It was brought to the Torreferrussa recovery center but it died soon afterwards. There are some photos of the bird being helped here.
(4) Cáceres. A bird that seems a pure gularis was seen on 12.10 at Dehesa boyal, Navalmoral de la Mata, Cáceres (Pedro Gómez Correas)
(5) Cádiz. The bird present and seen intermitenty at Cadiz bay marshes, Cádiz, was seen again on 29.10 at Puerto Real saltpans (Rafael García Costales).
(6) Murcia. A pale grey bird was first found on 31.10 in the company of 12 Little Egrets at the 'Desembocadura de la Rambla de Albujon', Cartagena, Murcia (Lat. 37.715982, Lon. -0.859382) and remained there into November (Richard Howard). There are four late-afternooon thumbnails here.

ne bird, with a yellow ring, thus from rather unknown but tending to be an escape, origin was seen at Ojuelos, Marchena, Sevilla, on 18.10 (Paco Chiclana, Manolo Villaécija).See a thumbnail here.

(2) Ávila. A bird was seen and photographed on 16.10 (Miguel Rouco, Juan Sagardía). It showed an abnormal moult pattern so escape origin cannot be discarded at all. Rüppell's Vulture Gyps rueppellii (1-2,3)
(1-2) Cádiz On 3-4.10 one was seen over Cazalla bird observatory, Tarifa, Cádiz (Javier Elorriaga/Fundación Migres).Later in the day another was seen from the same place that could not be photographed. Both were immatures showing two feather generations: one juvenile and the rest moulted, hence birds born in 2007 (J.Elorriaga).See a thumbnail of the 1st bird here. Perhaps these or another two were seen on 4.10 at Santuario valley, Tarifa (Patricia Carrasco, Ricardo Campos, Darío Delgado, Javier Elorriaga y David Cuenca).
Two birds were seen on 15.10 amongst Griffon Vultures crossing the Straits to Africa from Tarifa, Cádiz (Javier Elorriaga/Fundación Migres).See a photo below and a thumbnail here. It's difficult to say how many Ruppell's have been seen this year but these two birds were definitely different from any other (J.Elorriaga).

(3) Cádiz On 5.10 one was seen from La Hoya area, Tarifa, Cádiz (Javier Elorriaga/Fundación Migres).

Hybrid Lesser Spotted x (hybrid Lesser Spotted x Greater Spotted) Eagle Aquila pomarina x (clanga x pomarina) (1)
(1) Cádiz. A proven ringed and radio-tracked hybrid coming from Rostock, Germany was seen at La Janda area on 7.10 (Tomasz Chodkiewicz). This bird can be seen in this page from Colectivo Ornitológico Cigüeña Negra. According to information from radio-trackers, the father would be a Lesser-Spotted Eagle and the mother an already hybrid clanga x pomarina and the bird wears a satellite-transmitter device, having been ringed by B.Meyburg. Further complications to identify this group of eagles, whose 1st generation hybrids were already known (ed. comment).

(1-2) Cádiz On 1-2.10 one was seen from La Hoya area, Tarifa, Cádiz (Javier Elorriaga/Fundación Migres). A 2nd individual might be possibly present and its characters are being examined.This bird was seen again at la Hoya on 12.10 (Javier Elorriaga/ Fundacion Migres). See three thumbnails here.

(3) Cádiz. One was seen during the evening of 19.10 over the Sierra de la Platta 'swift caves' (Martin Coates)

Corncrake Crex crex (1,2,3,4)
(1) Cádiz A bird was collected injured on 12.10 at Rota, Cádiz (communicated by Rafael García). See a thumbnail here. The bird was brought to the Jerez zoo but it will never get back into the wild due to severe injuries it received in its wing.

(2) Valencia. A bird was found dead at playa de Les Palmeres, Sueca, in the Albufera de Valencia area on 13.10 (Bosco Dies). (4) Valencia. A bird was collected at Mislata downtown, Valencia, on 15.10 and after taken into care at the recovery center, was released on 21.10 at Devesa de El Saler, Parque Natural de l'Albufera (Centro de Protección de Fauna de "La Granja de El Saler")

Sociable Plover Vanellus gregarius (1)
(1) Girona On 19.10 one was seen at El Cortalet, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Girona (Gerard Dalmau). See three thumbnails here. Perhaps the same bird was seen at Torroella de Montgrí, Baix Empordà, Girona on 25.10 -and possibly since 18.10 afternoon - (Julio Pérez Cañestro). See a thumbnail here. Semipalmated Stint Calidris pusilla(1)
(1) Asturies The bird at Playa de Espasa, Colunga, Asturies remained in the area on 2.10, when one of its legs seemed a bit injured (Clemente Álvarez Usategui). There is a video of the bird as seen on 29.9 here (Luis Carrera).Not seen on 6.10 or afterwards, so 2.10 was the last date (C.Álvarez Usategui).

Pectoral Sandpiper Calidris melanotos (1,2-3,4,5,6,7,8-10,11,12,13,14-15)

(1) Bizkaia A juvenile was found on 5.10 at Muskiz, Bizkaia, within the protected area LIC Estuario del Barbadun (Juan María Domínguez y José Luis Pacheco; Juan Carlos Andrés).See more information in the Miradas Cantabricas blog (opens in another window) and a thumbnail here.
(2-3) Asturies Two new birds were seen at Ria de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies on 7.10 (Adolfo Villaverde Garrido).
(4) València. On 1.10 and 9.10 a bird was found at el Cavall ricefields, Sueca, València (Bosco Dies). It may be one remaining bird of those arrived in September but this individual was not one of the ringed that month.See a thumbnail here.
(5) Cáceres. A juvenile was found at Valdesalor reservoir, Cáceres, on 14.10 ( Carlos Fernández Díaz).
(6) Palencia. On 17.10 a bird was seen at Laguna de Boada, Palencia (Carlos Naza Bocos).
(7) topo Lanzarote A new bird was found on 15.10 at Salinas de Janubio,Yaiza, Lanzarote, Canary Islands (Juan José Ramos Melo, Pedro González del Campo, Francisco Javier García Vargas).See a thumbnail here (F.J.García Vargas). (8-10) Asturies Three juveniles were seen at ria de Villaviciosa, Asturies on 13.10 (Luis Mario Arce, Belén Alonso). Two of them still around on 21.10 (Adolfo Villaverde) and one on 26.10 ( Luis Mario Arce & Belén Alonso).

(2) Barcelona On 19.10 one was seen and photographed from El Sabogal hide, Ca l'Arana Natural Reserve, Delta del Llobregat, Barcelona (Pedro Bescós, Maria José Valencia and José A. Flores Galan) but not on 20.10 despite search (Armand Ramal). First for the area. The bird was relocated from the same place on 21.10 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Armand Ramal, Mike O'Neill; Pedro Bescós, Juan Bescós, Raúl Bastida). Murcia A juvenile bird was at Salinas de Marchamalo, La Manga, Murcia on 1.10 (Richard Howard; Fernando Escribano, Antonio Fernández Caro) and on 2.10 too (Richard Howard).
(2) Huelva. On 16.10 one was seen at P.N.Marismas del Odiel, Huelva (José Manuel Méndez)

(2) Asturies One was seen from Punta de la Vacam Gozón, Asturies, on 3.10 (Jorge Valella, Nacho Vega, Jose Antonio Larriba y Daniel López-Velasco).
(3-4) A Coruña Two more were seen from Estaca de Bares, A Coruña in a six-hour seawatch on 3.10 (Antonio Sandoval, Gonzalo Lage, Ricardo Hevia)
(5-6) Cantabria. Two more birds were seen from Cabo Ajo, Cantabria, on 4.10 (Ángela Pombo, Yves Borremans, Javi Palazuelo y Jesús Menéndez).
(7) A Coruña. On 7.10 a juvenile was seen off Estaca de Bares, A Coruña (Ricardo Hevia)

Lesser-Crested Tern Sterna bengalensis (1,2,3,4,5-6,7-8,9,10)
(1) Cádiz A bird was seen flying E off Tarifa island, Tarifa, Cadiz, on 4.10 (Patricia Carrasco, Ricardo Campos, Darío Delgado y David Cuenca).
(2) Huelva. An adult was found close to Punta Umbria, Odiel marshes, Huelva, on 19.10 (Alberto Savijn).Seen again on 20.10 (Jose Manuel Mendez).
(3) Málaga. A c.f. Lesser-Crested but indeed an Orange-billed Tern sp. (e.g Lesser Crested or hybrid of some kind) was seen at Guadalhorce river mouth, Málaga on 15.10 (Tristan Guillosson).On 13.10 a Lesser-Crested was reported from the same area (Ángel García, Gonzalo Lage).
(4) Murcia. An unringed bird was seen and photographed (see two thumbnails in the right column to the base) on 21.10 at Salinas de Marchamalo, Murcia (Richard Howard). Seen again on 24.10 and 27.10, the latter being the last sighting. As this appeared to be moulting, maybe it will be around for a bit longer (Richard Howard). See a couple of thumbnails here.
(5-6) Murcia. On 18.10 from Cabo de Palos near the lighthouse and during an afternoon seawatch
with a very heavy passage of birds south in the most unlikely conditions including approx. 4,000 Cory's Shearwaters, 200 Balearic Shearwaters and 150 Sandwich Terns two separate individual Lesser Crested Terns were seen (Richard Howard,Antonio Fuentes Marín and Inés Chamón Fernandez)

(7-8) Cádiz. An adult and a juvenile were together close to the shore for about ten minutes just south of Bolonia beach on 18.10. Both departed northwards - steady northward passage of Sandwich Terns, Balearic and Cory's Shearwaters during the late morning and again during the evening (Martin Coates).
(9) Cádiz. On 21.10 an euring 3 bird was seen at Chipiona harbour, Cádiz (Xurxo Pinheiro).
(10) Valencia. A bird was seen on 15.10 at l'Albufera lagoon perched on posts near gola de El Pujol (Vicente Llorens)

Orange-billed Tern Sterna sp (elegans-like or hybrid of some kind) (1)
(1) Murcia. The yellow-pvc ringed bird which was ringed in october 2002 at Odiel marshes as an adult, then bred at Valencia in 2006 and apparently the same having bred at Ebro delta in 2004 & 2005 always paired to a Sandwich Tern, and that was seen at Valencia on 13-14.8.2008 (more information on this in the enclosed link after having been recorded this season in France (apparently breeding) and Italy is now at Murcia from 30.9 (Richard Howard) and in october as follows: 8.10 (R.Howard), 14-17.10 (R.Howard), 18.10 (R.Howard, Antonio Fuentes and Inés Chamón) and 19.10 (R.Howard, A.Fuentes).See a photo below and many thumbnails here (R.Howard).Last sighting, 22.10 at 17:40 at the same location (Richard Howard)Sterna sp

Cádiz. At Tarifa, Cádiz, there was one on 16.10 within a mixed hirundine flock (Tristan Guilloson).

Illes Balears. A bird was first seen then latter trapped and ringed at Cabrera islands, Balearics on 4.10 (Juan Manuel Perez,Gonzalo Nunez-Lagos,David Almonacid,Luis Rodriguez, Jesús Notario y Eduardo Amengual). See a thumbnail of the bird before being ringed here.

Valladolid. A bird was reported from Valladolid city on 19.10 (Carlos Naza Bocos)

Barcelona. A bird was seen at close range on 2.10 at Filipines marsh, Llobregat Delta, Viladecans, Barcelona (Ferran López). Possibly the same bird was trapped and ringed at the same area on 6.10 (Joan Castelló).

(2) Huelva. On 5.10 one was trapped at Estación de Anillamiento de Manecorro, PN Doñana, Huelva. It is the 5th trapped there since the station begun its operations back in 1994 (Iván San Martín, Ángel Sallent, Antonio Torrijo, Fernando Ortega y Yago Matías). (3) Tarragona. (4) Asturies. On 15/10 the bird found on 12.10 at Lluanco, Asturies (Manolo Pajuelo y Agustina Alvarez) was still around ( Xuan Cortés).Last seen on 19.10 (Jose Antonio Garcia Fernandez)

(6) Cantabria. On 15.10 one was reported from Parque de las Llamas, Cantabria (Nacho Fernández Calvo)
(7) Castelló. A bird was seen in a field near Benicàssim, Castelló, on 8.10 (Miguel Tirado Bernat)
(8) Tarragona. On 21.10 an euring 3 bird was trapped and ringed at La Sínia, Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Tarragona (Sergi Sales, Marc Pérez). See a thumbnail here.
(9) València. On 22-23.10 one has been seen at Racó de l'Olla, Albufera de Valencia, Valencia (J.I.Dies). See a thumbnail here and more at the Birding Albufera site here.
(10) Asturies. A bird just arrived to mainland Spain was seen in a bushes in the edge of Perlora cliffs on 18.10, coinciding with an unprecedented Chiffchaff arrival (Daniel López Velasco). In a few minutes it flew to a forested better habitat nearby. Seen later again (D.L.Velasco, Clemente A. Usategui) and on 20.10 too (D.López Velasco, Elias García Sánchez, Nacho Vega y Marco Garcia). A different bird from that seen in late September, only seen for a day in that area which has a tremendous potential for warblers of any kind.
(11) Asturies. A bird was first heard from the car, then seen at close distance in a bush at Cabo Peñas, Gozón, Asturies, on 19.10, coinciding with a heavy unprecedented arrival of Chiffchafs (over 350 birds in 1,5 km walk), 3 Richard's Pipits and others (Daniel López-Velasco).
(12) València. On 24.10 a bird was seen at Canet d'En Berenguer, Marjal d'Almenara, València. It was on a poplar at Camí del Mansegar, withi the Area 'Agrupación de Aguas Pozo Malvasur' (Clemente Álvarez Usategui).
(13) Tarragona. One was seen at El Garxal area, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona on 25.10 (Cristian Jensen i Iben Hove).
(14) Castelló. A bird was trapped and ringed at Columbretes islands, Castelló on 17.10 (Pablo Vera). See a thumbnail here.
(15) Cantabria. On 17.10 one was reported from Oriñón, Castro Urdiales, Cantabria, within a Chiffchaff group (David González Ceballos).
(16) Cantabria. On 30.10 one was seen at Alday marshes, Santander bay, Cantabria (Guillermo Rodríguez Lázaro).
(17) Asturies. A bird was 1st heard then seen early in the morning of 26.10 at Bañugues, Asturies (Daniel López Velasco). Relocated by midday a the same area (Manuel Quintana Becerra, Pedro G. Rovés, Daniel L. Velasco).See a thumbnail here.
(18) Asturies. On 23.10 there was a bird within a Chiffchaff and Firecrests group at Monte Deva, Xixón, (Elías García Sánchez)
(19) Sevilla. On 25.10 one was trapped and ringed at Parque del Alamillo, Sevilla, Sevilla (Alberto Álvarez Pérez (Grupo E.O.A.S), Pedro Sáez Gómez (E.B.D.), Alfonso Barragán Marín (Grupo GOSUR) y Jesús Fernández Mejías (Grupo GOSUR).See three thumbnails here.
(20) Cantabria. On 31.10 one was seen at Oriñón, Castro Urdiales, Cantabria, probably a different bird from (15), (Guillermo Rodríguez Lázaro).

Alicante. On 10.10, a bird was trapped at Amadorio river, Vilajoyosa, Alicante (Antonio Zaragozí, helped by Toni Mulet and Guillermo Mayor). A description has already been submitted to the Rarities Committe of this bird, the 3rd for Spain. Red-breasted Flycatcher Ficedula parva (1,2)
Huelva. An Euring 3 bird was trapped and ringed at Manecorro ringing station, Parque Nacional de Doñana, Almonte, Huelva on 1.10. (2) Gibraltar. An Euring 3 was trapped and ringed on 21.10 at Jews' Gate Bird Observatory, Gibraltar (Ray Marsh). It was seen later in the area (Charlie Perez, K. Bensusan & R. Scarlet Rosefinch Carpodacus eryhtrynus (1)
Asturies. On 9.10 a bird, probably a juvenile, was seen at Viodo, Cabo Peñas, Gozón, Asturies (Manuel Quintana). The bird was coming in from the sea, flying low and calling.

Lapland Bunting Calcarius lapponicus (1-2)
(1-2) Asturies On 18.10, two birds were found at Queirúas, Valdés, Asturies (Elias Garcia Sánchez)

Recent reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded to the Spanish RC if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind. Gibraltar news are included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with anew icon.
