(1) Lugo There was a shy bird of nominal ssp. at Riocaldo lagoons, Begonte, Lugo
on 16.5 (Cosme Damián Romai)

Ring-necked Duck Aythya collaris (1)
Ciudad Real There was a drake at rio Alcobilla, Ciudad Real, from 2-3.5 (Pablo Pascual). See a thumbnail here.


Pied-billed Grebe Podilymbus podiceps (1)
(1) Lugo The bird seen at Riocaldo lagoons, Begonte, Lugo from 23.8.2007 then again in Spring and Autumn 2008 and from January 2009 was seen again at the lagoon
on 16.5 (Cosme Damián Romai)

Lanzarote Two adults were doing display courtship maneouvres near a coastal cave at Lanzarote island, Canary Islands, on 1.5 (Juan Sagardia, Miguel Rouco). Lots of photos in Juan Sagardia's blog here.

Lesser Flamingo Phoenicopterus minor (1-4)
Málaga There were four at Fuentedepiedra lagoon flamingo breeding colony, Málaga on 2.5 (Paco Chiclana).See a photo below (P.Chiclana). On 15.5 there was an individual sitting on a nest in the breeding colony, with another standing in another point of it and two more in the lagoon but not nearby (Albert Burgas). Again on 30.5 four remain in the lagoon, one in the colony and three more near Cerro del Pino viewpoint (Hugues Dufourny & Véronique Buchet)

Rüppell's Vulture Gyps rueppellii (1,2)
(1) Cádiz. A different bird from that seen on 30.3 was seen at Algeciras, Cádiz on 24.5 (Javier Eloriaga / Fundación Migres). See two photos below and two thumbnails here.

(2) Cádiz. A different bird from (1) was seen at Cazalla bird observatory, Tarifa, on 26.5(Javier Eloriaga / Fundación Migres).See a thumbnail here.

Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus (1,2,3,4)
(1) Badajoz On 1.5 a pale phase immature was seen at 'El Charnecal', at km.5 of BA-131, Usagre-Hinojosa, Badajoz (Xurxo Pinheiro).

(2) Cádiz. There was one at Trebujena marshes, Cádiz, on 7.5 (Paco Chiclana,Fernando del Valle, Ricardo Martín-Baylo y Rafa García).
(3) Cádiz. There was one rufous bird very close to the Ojen Valley just out of Facinas, Cádiz, on 11.5 (Graham Critchell)

(4) Cádiz. There was one bird on 17.5 at Tarifa, Cádiz (Miguel González y Pako Zufiaur). See a photo below (P.Zufiaur) and three thumbnails here.

Cream-coloured Courser Cursorius cursor (1)
(1) Tarragona The bird found on 25.4 at Punta de la Banya, PN Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona was not seen until 1.5 when relocated in the afternoon (Carles Domingo). It was seen later by other birders around, when photographed close to the dune at the beach, N of the bird observatory. It left the area by 20:30 heading N (Carles Domingo; Miquel Angel Franch et al; Enric Badosa et al; Helena Arbonés, Ricard Gutiérrez, Gerard Gutiérrez, Ariadna Gutiérrez). Seen again on 2.5 (Manolo García Tarrasón)and 3.5 (Manolo García y Fran Ramírez; Carles Domingo).The bird remained in the same area all week long and was seen again on 7-8.5 (Carles Domingo). It can be observed from the public viewing tower of Punta de la Banya, close to the beach, heading north (ed. comment).

Pectoral Sandpiper Calidris melanotos (1,2)
(1) Girona A bird was found on 2.5 (Frédéric Veyrunes) at El Matà, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà. It was seen later by more observers and on 3.5 again (Antonio Ceballos, Jordi Martí-Aledo). Not relocated

(2) Asturies On 18.5 a bird was found at Ría de la Villa, Villaviciosa, Asturies (Adolfo Villaverde Garrido)

Murcia On 14.4 there was a bird at Salinas de Marchamalo, Cabo de Palos, Murcia, where it was relocated the following day 15.5 (Richard Howard).See two photos below and thumbnails here (R.Howard).

Iceland Gull Larus glaucoides (1,2,3,4)
(1) Asturies. The 1st winter bird seen at Luarca, Asturies from 9.4 was relocated again on 9.5 (Adolfo Villaverde).
(2) Pontevedra. A 1st winter/summer was present at Bueu, Pontevedra, from 7-13.5 (José Ramón Gómez). See a photo below and two thumbnails here.

(3) A Coruña. A 1st summer was at playa de Meirás, Valdoviño, A Coruña on 19.5 (Antonio Gutiérrez). See a photo in Antonio's blog here.

(4) Pontevedra. An individual was seen on 23.5 flying N from the vessel 'Nauja' within a project for CEMMA about 12 nautic miles W of Cies Islands, Vigo, Pontevedra (Pablo Covelo, Ángela Llavona, Esther Abad y Xulio Valeiras). See a thumbnail here.

(1) Lugo There was an adult at ría de Foz, Lugo on 17.5, the 1st for Galicia (Luís José Salaverri). It was later twitchted by other birders (Pablo Pita y Javier Cantil). See three photos below and thumbnails here.

Orange billed-tern Sterna sp. (1,2-3,)
(1) Almería There was an orange-billed tern of those 'elegant-tern like' (large billed, white rumped etc...) at Cabo de Gata saltpans, Almería, on 1.5 (Raimundo Martín).
Probably the same bird was seen on 28.5 (Daniel Bosch), see a thumbnail here.

(2-3) Valencia. A pair of birds showing elegans features were paired and finally layed an egg in the Sandwich Tern colony at Albufera de Valencia from 7-11.5 (J.Ignacio Dies, B.Dies). One of the birds was the male marked with PVC ring in 2006 in that area that bred that year with a sandvicensis rearing one hybrid young. Seen again in 2007 and 2008 in that area and other Mediterranean locations. See Birding Albufera website for further details (in Spanish) and two photos here and here. Also a photo below (J.Ignacio Dies).Apparently the same pair was relocated in the Ebre Delta, Tarragona on 26.5 (Ricard Gutiérrez) where one of the individuals had been seen the same week at the same place (Carles Domingo). Little Swift Apus affinis (1-5,6,7-8)
Cádiz There were five at Guadalquivir river mouth, Cádiz, on 7.5
(Paco Chiclana,Fernando del Valle, Ricardo Martín-Baylo y Rafa García). There were seven at the same place and three occupied nests on 31.5 (Bob Hibbett)

(6) Sevilla. there was an individual at the Sevilla N sierra (Mario Martín, Ricardo Martín-Baylo y Fernando del Valle, Paco Chiclana)

(7-8) Cádiz There were seven at the same place and three occupied nests on 31.5 (Bob Hibbett). We consider five of the birds those already reported as (1-5) and therefore two new are added (ed. comment)

Sevilla. A bird was reported at Isla Menor, Puebla del Río, Sevilla, between a poplar wood and a cultivade field (Paco Chiclana)

Black-crowned Tchagra Tchagra senegallus (1) SECOND FOR SPAIN
Badajoz. A bird was seen near Orellana la Vieja, Badajoz, near the Guadalefra bridge on 14.5 (Stefaan Horemans

From March 2005 this webpage only includes records of birds needing homologation by CR/SEO. For other local rarities contact local bird reports or records committees. See here those rarities only for the Canary Islands also dealt by CR/SEO. Changes in application to the rarity list from January 2006. New rarities include Sylvia curruca, Crex crex, Sterna bengalensis and others. Larus delawarensis and Anthus richardi have been withdrawn from the rarity list and are not be included from 2006.

Recent reports includes the latest sightings from the whole of Spain which are both personal observations, communications or have been released in E-Mail lists. Please contact the authors before using any photo for anything else than personal reference. Any submitted news to this page will be forwarded to the Spanish RC for their knowledge if enough substantiated but inclusion in this page does not imply acceptance or homologation of any kind which needs a form to be sent. Gibraltar news are included thanks to Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society but this has no more implication than the sake of completeness given this area situation. Names of localities are featured as given by the authors of the records, that should be cited as those. Today news are marked with anew icon. We would welcome to receive a spare copy of those journals using these news for commercial purposes. Contact RG at address at the front page. From April 2005 only news of rarities needing homologation by the Spanish Rarities Committee are included.
